This is a very fediverse-y thread with many people describing their network machine naming themes. It feels very wholesome, in a tech-nerd kind of way, and I'm 100% here for it.

But the most interesting part, to me, was using those #hostnames with `finger` and `talk`. See a machine name listed with a domain that was clearly a university or technical school, use `finger @hostname` to see who was logged on, and then `talk username@hostname` to see if they wanted to chat.
On university machines, the users were mostly students. And lots of them were open to #chatting with some random other student in, say, Canada.
I did a lot of dialing into the #university machine I used in the evenings. And I'd look up machines at schools in Europe - mostly the Nordic countries, as they seemed to have good connections to the internet. Lots of machines at schools in Sweden (.se), Norway (.no), Finland (.fi). I remember some in Germany (.de), Denmark (.dk), Belgium (.be), the UK (.uk), and probably others. But the Nordic countries were my favourite.
Luckily for monolingual me, many students on these machines spoke English to one degree or another. Had lots of interesting chats with people studying computer science, engineering, physics, and astronomy, where those fields used a lot of computing tools.
I recall lots of discussions with those sorts of people. Sometimes I wonder if any of them were `[email protected]` or some of the other contemporary or future luminaries in #computing circles.
Anyway... to mangle an AT&T marketing slogan (apropos for Unix - and so is `apropos`), in those days, you really could "reach out and finger someone".

Incident Responders: people name their systems silly names. What's the silliest name you've had to put into an incident communication or report? The one time you wrote "SPONGEBOB was compromised" or "the hackers logged in to NIRVANA" and couldn't stop giggling?

My machine hostnames are characters from DOTA2, the game - IO, Lich, Pugna, etc.
How do you name your machines?

Thinking about my new workstation name... Would appreciate some help. Can you guess the scheme? 😉

What kind of cool naming schemes do you have for your computers?

How do y’all decide #hostnames for various devices and servers, especially when you have a lot of things that needs hostnames? My current naming scheme is running out of nice hostnames, so I’m considering moving to various city names as my hostnames, but I’m curious how other people assign them.

Apropos of nothing… always worth keeping in mind
#Hostnames and #usernames to reserve
