Ah, Lestrade. Watson tells me that your new AI toy Claudi has solved the case of the missing Ethernet cable. Oh, indeed? The Duke of Timberland?
So sorry, Lestrade, but Claudi is wrong. Timberland couldn't have done it, as is obvious to anyone who looks at the actual case with open eyes. Afraid I can't explain further at this moment, terribly busy. But why don't you pay a visit to the Duke's daughter. Ask her about her NeXTcube. Yes, Lestrade, her NeXTcube. Find someone who can explain it to you.
And get rid of Claudi. You don't really need any additional source of blunder and incompetence at the Yard, do you Lestrade?

I was blind to the obvious, Watson. I realised too late just how far and deep Moriarty has spun his fiendish network. Every minister and undersecretary in Whitehall, the CEO and CTO of every major corporation, the heads of our learned institutions, they all are part of Professor Moriarty's vast attention channelling machine. I cannot even trust Mycroft any more.
Our intriguing visitor has provided us with the most ingenious antidote, my friend. Lady Joan (his tone changed as he said the mysterious woman's name) has found a way to let people speak outside the Professor's net. Her strange Protocol is far from elegant, but it is immune to Moriarty's spell. Lady Joan (again, his voice became warmer as he said her name) wields this clumsy weapon with natural grace and with surprising efficiency. Her followers are an awkward lot; we will join them. Ah, I hear someone at the door. Joan has arrived!

Mrs Hudson had brought them tea. My friend and his guest sat close together and spoke intensely for a long time. At the end they both rose and performed what appeared to be a curious little ritual. They both raised their right arms, formed fists, and bumped their fists gently into each other, sharing a conspiratory smile. Most extraordinary. I admit I could not help blushing a little when I saw it.
Later that evening Holmes came to my study. Our visitor is a remarkable woman and our most powerful ally yet, Watson. Lady Joan will join me again tomorrow, I will take her to Imperial College to meet my old friend Professor Forthlisp. I need you to do some research for me, Watson. Find out what you can about something called the ActivityPub Protocol. I don't want to trouble Lady Joan with too many questions that have obvious answers. She really is the most remarkable woman, Watson.

Well, I'd say this concludes the case, Watson. Much too boring to be turned into one of your pieces, I dare say. That it was Sir Montague who had burned the papers was obvious from the start, was it not. Even Lestrade would have noticed it, eventually. The only challenge left was to find the discarded USB stick, and doing that required little imagination, merely a good deal of steady footwork. Important perhaps, but rather tedious and unexciting, wouldn't you agree? I need to be more careful in the cases I take on, Watson. I am too old for tedium.

I shan't be working today, Watson. When looking for the Barnaby papers I stumbled upon the good old violin case, and I thought I could try my hand at the fiddle again. The magic of music, eh?
Excellent idea, Holmes, playing your trusted violin will do you all manner of good. Did I mention that I'm off to Kent to visit my cousin Alfie? Back next week.
-
Holmes spoke in a low voice, in the unmodulated manner of the man who cannot be sure whether he will stay the course. I shall retire for a few days, Watson. Tell Mrs Hudson to send all visitors away. No new cases. I will be in my study. Get me paper and coloured pencils, will you, Watson? Leave them by the door. Ah, one more thing. I want the wifi off.

Mrs Hudson had brought tea and I found Holmes to be in unusually expansive mode, almost chatty.
The Professor has one weakness, Watson. He thinks that I hate him for being sharper than I am. He doesn't understand that I love him for it. That's what lets me see with his eyes, and that is how I will get him. He's finished already, Watson. I will miss him when he's gone. Ah, Mrs Hudson, yes please, we'd love to have some more of your excellent cucumber sandwiches, thank you.

Inspector Lestrade did not try to hide his pride. "Charlotte, our new AI agent, really is the ticket. We gave her the data and she found the murderer within seconds. We have arrested Jones, the plumber. Not sure whether we will need your services much longer, Holmes," he laughed. "Charlotte does the work." Sherlock smiled drily.
What can one do about someone like Lestrade, Watson, he said to me once we sat in the cab. Someone who can't think can't see the truth even when it stares them in the face. Jones would never have twisted the compression coupling counter-clockwise, he's a trained plumber, for Heaven's sake! It was Lord Jenkins who removed the pipe, ignorant of the nature of the fittings. Hence the scratch marks on the brass. Lestrade will call on us again by evening. It is Tuesday, Watson, I believe Mrs Hudson has some cake for us. We can keep some for Lestrade.

My friend had stared out of the open window for a long time. When he turned his gaze back into the room, he seemed disoriented. Remind me, Watson, will you, why are we here?
Oh Holmes, to help Lestrade of course, he called us in. The Duke of Hensbach-Oxholm was found seated at the Viscount's desk, his throat cut by ...
Ah, yes, the Duke. Well, the case has solved itself, hasn't it, Watson, it's perfectly plain. Tell Lestrade that we shan't be able to assist him. He'll notice the empty ashtray eventually.

What is Windows 11, Holmes asked distractedly, his eyes fixed on the gopher session that ran in gentle orange glow on his ancient IBM P70 Luggable. You do know, Watson, don't you, that I have no time for knowledge that can't be applied.
Windows 11 is the successor to Windows 10, I replied drily, though for once Holmes did not spot my sarcasm. He kept typing messages.
I dropped myself into the armchair next to Holmes's desk, unfazed. I knew I would get his attention soon enough.
Moriarty uses a Windows laptop when travelling. He's updated to Windows 11 and he's unaware that Copilot keeps editing his memos to his agents.
The rattling of the keyboard had stopped. Moriarty's network is in disarray, Sherlock. "Vulnerability" is the word that springs to mind.
Holmes had taken the Meerschaum pipe out of its box and started cutting slices off his Gawith & Hoggarth Black Twist rope tobacco. Tell me more, Watson. I want to know everything.
-
Hence. Holmes spoke abruptly, after a long silence. Hence Lestrade and his AI toy machines will never know anything of value about Moriarty. The Professor thinks. Lestrade and his machines have no idea what that even means.
I tell you, Watson, a single day with Moriarty as my enemy is worth more to me than a year with Lestrade and his machines as my allies. Life, Watson, life! Oh I am so bored by the automatons.

Thank you, Mrs Hudson, and to you too. May the coming year be a safe year for us all.
I had never seen Holmes address our landlady in such personal terms. His voice was trembling a little. I believe I could see him wipe a tear off his eye. The unsavoury end to the pearl necklace case had hit him harder than I had first thought.
To a safe Year 2026, I said, raising my glass. We'll get through it, somehow, won't we, Sherlock.

Watson, you're back in. I can't solve the Labeyrie case on my own, it cries out for the solid grind of a natural pedant. Your're the man, Watson. Cancel your other appointments. We'll be on the 3.42 train to Oxford.
-
Mrs Hudson beamed at me as she opened the door. Oh Doctor Watson, bless you, how good to see you back. Mr Holmes has been quite unbearable without your calming influence. He asked me to take you to him as soon as you arrive.
Ah, Watson, what took you so long. Have a look at the SW3 street map on the table, will you. You notice a curious omission. Find me the man who is responsible for it.

So, Watson, I think you will understand, this case needs tact. I will have to do it alone. No series in The Strand this time, Watson.
Mrs Hudson had just brought us tea. I poured myself another cup, my hands were trembling and much of the tea ended up on tray. I had known the cut would come, ever since Sherlock had returned. But I had not expected the pain to be so intense.
I'll go for a walk, Holmes. The Labeyrie folder is on your desk, you may find it useful.
As I put on my coat, I saw Sherlock taking the folder and throwing it into the Lestrade box, unopened.

Pass me the file with the Pasadena case, Watson, will you. And send a note to Lestrade, tell him we need to interview Count Labeyrie. He must not leave the country. Clearly it was he who opened the window in the attic.
Holmes was back in form. His eyes fresh, the gloom of the past few weeks gone. My joy of seeing the old friend recovered was marred by the realisation that I was no longer in charge of the investigation. I had taken the count off the list of suspects and had told Lestrade to let him go. Holmes had been hidden in his room all this time, endlessly producing walls of sound on Moriarty's old Moog synthesizer. How did he even know that Labeyrie had been a suspect, and how did he hear about the attic?
Of course, my friend, I said, I shall write to Lestrade presently. I rang the bell for Mrs Hudson. Sherlock would want breakfast.
-
Holmes was even more emotional than usual. "I can't keep up this charade much longer, Watson. The public have seen through it from the start. They know that you are the clever one."
Sherlock's voice was broken. His hands trembled as he filled his pipe; half of the tobacco ended up on the floor.
"My dear Holmes, of course not. No one knows. And remember, it pays the bills. People want to read about you, not me. I know this is hard for you, Sherlock. But we have no choice. Holmes sells, Watson doesn't. Moriarty wouldn't like it if we stopped the monthly payments."
-
Curious, Watson, most curious. The text is written like a Linkedin post, and the argument is entirely circular. Moriarty clearly has used chatGPT to write this text, Watson. He must know that I recognise this immediately. What is he trying to tell us? This is a three-pipe problem, Watson.
