#Revolutionaries behind the 1908 Hanoi Poison Plot detained at the Hoa Lo Prison by the French colonists in 1941.

13 of them had their heads chopped off instantly and displayed in public. The French later used the photo for an #Indochina #propaganda postcard.

Whilst the second world war was raging across the world, in Vietnam the #VietMinh #Liberation Movement, led by famed revolutionary Ho Chi Minh, was taking birth. #HoChiMinh had one dream. An independent Vietnam free of foreign rule.

The first year after the war had Japan, and then Britain keen to get their hands on Vietnam. But they were soon replaced by Vietnam’s old colonial rulers: the French.

For nine long years, thereafter, from 1946 to 1954 the First Indochina War ripped across the country. Spilling blood, lives, and peace. On one side were the French. More adamant to stay. More aggressive in their rule. They were helped by the US who provided advisers, funding, and weapons from behind the scenes.
Anti-communist Vietnamese loyalists aided the French rulers’ legitimacy. On the other side was Ho Chi Minh and his revolutionaries.

Things eventually came to a head in 1954 with the Geneva Conference and creation of the 17th Parallel, a Demilitarized Zone [DMZ] on 17 degrees latitude north.

#OTD in 1943 five #ConscientiousObjectors began a hunger strike at the United States Northeastern Penitentiary in #Lewisburg Pennsylvania, they were soon joined by a sixth.

Forced feeding of the religious and political #pacifists refusing to fight #WWII began October 22nd as they persisted to oppose what they felt was unjust and unconstitutional "Totalitarian" control of their lives. The hunger strike ended in December 1943 when the head of the Federal Bureau of #Prisons, ended the #censorship of their mail but retained the right to read #PrisonerMail. The men were released after the conclusion of World War II.

One of those #LewisburgPrison #HungerStrikers was a theological seminary student named #DaveDellinger who had been educated at Yale and Oxford before joining the Divinity School of NYC Theological Seminary. Dellinger had already learned as an ambulance driver in the #SpanishCivilWar that "whoever won the armed struggle, it would not be the people". Dellinger later worked with the Berrigan brothers, Daniel Ellsberg and helped organize the 1967 protest march that encircled the #Pentagon. Dellinger would later end up as the oldest member of the #Chicago7 protesters, who was acquitted in a show trial alongside Abbie Hoffman in the late 60's. He made trips to Japan to protest #AtomicWeapons, and went to China and North Vietnam, securing the release of captured American servicemen, acting as a go-between with North Vietnamese leader #HoChiMinh.

President #HoChiMinh is a figure with universal stature, a great #revolutionary who fought tirelessly for the best for #Vietnamese people and #humanity, and a very great but humble man Dr. Ruvislei González Sáez.

Saez, who is also VP of the #Cuba #Vietnam Friendship Association, affirmed that the great #ideology of President Ho Chi Minh, one of the most important figures in the 20th century, remains alive among the 100 million Vietnamese people & world #revolutionaries.

One revelation was that the CIA had funded and encouraged the 1963 #coup against, and #assassination of, the president of South Vietnam, #NgoDinhDiem.

"By 1963, the United States had sent thousands of U.S. soldiers to Vietnam to fight the northern communist government led by President #HoChiMinh. The U.S. initially supported Diem because he was fighting the north. However, Diem’s persecution of Buddhists made him an unpopular ruler, leading the Kennedy administration to doubt Diem’s ability to win the war. The coup and Diem’s assassination took place in early November 1963, just a few weeks before Kennedy’s assassination."
