    The prompt is Dragon

Dragon Fli Empire, “Tight Spot” from “Underground Hip-Hop Volume 04” (2006 ), originally from from “The Invasion LP” (2005)

I’ve done a lot of musical exploration via #compilations. Where #HipHop is concerned, I get tired of the overproduced #HipPop streaming everywhere, but I have found compilations of so-called #UndergroundHipHop to be great sources of chill/gritty/real sounding stuff, so much so that I’ll grab a release from a familiar source without first dipping into it for a listen. This is how I came to know this track from Dragon Fli Empire, itself yearning for more basic, sincere hip hop, from the fourth release in this great #compilation series from Urbnet Records.

  3. 10 Cents - “Me” (1999)

Continuing with bands from the early Silverlake scene, 10 Cents was another really fun but short-lived band that signed with the Dust Brothers' Hi-Ho label to release their second album, “Buggin’ Out”

The singer is Shawn Calizo, who was better known from the black metal band Von. But you'd never guess this from the sound of the album. It’s a funky and lightweight type of hip-hop mixed with indie pop, which the band called "hip-pop."

In addition to the standard guitar-guitar-bass-drums, there are string samples, keyboard scratching, and digital drum loops. Smooth harmonies and funky beats combine for an album that offers several good tracks, including the opener, “Blow It Up, Y’all”, “Clean Skin”, and one of my favorites, “Me”
