My sincere thoughts to those on the #Nepal / #Tibet #border so very affected by the recent (#climatechange-related) #glaciallakeoutburstflood (#GLOF) downstream affects (with a seeming #earthquake geotechnical failure trigger)

EDIT: Reading that ~100 million cubic metres of debris-laden water came down Nepal's Bhote Koshi valley; even as geologist familiar with 'non-human' time scales and a 'kinda-hydrologist-via-osmosis', that is simply an incomprehensible amount!

🌊 Nepal #FlashFlood | When #Mountain #Hazards #Cascade
The devastating flash #flood in Nepal is more than a flood story—it is a lesson in how interconnected the #Himalayan environment really is.
Preliminary assessments indicate that an #ice #rock #avalanche likely blocked the #LhendeKhola, causing #water to build up and then surge downstream into the #BhotekoshiRiver system. Scientists are still investigating the exact chain of events, including whether recent #seismic activity contributed to the slope failure. (The Kathmandu Post)

The #Himalaya is #warming rapidly.

“For years, the biggest climate warning from the Himalaya was easy to picture because glaciers were shrinking on the roof of Asia. Now, researchers are pointing to a quieter signal, one that can look almost harmless from a distance. The mountains are getting greener.
New research [link above] shows alpine vegetation moving higher across six Himalayan regions from 1999 to 2022, pushed in part by warming and reduced snow depth. That might sound like nature recovering, but in this fragile landscape, more plant cover at extreme heights may change how snow is stored, how water runs downhill, and how rivers behave for communities far below…”
