#WestBank / Andrey Makarevich… dead and alive… in Hebron
Soviet and Russian rock star Andrey Makarevich popped up in a promotional video made by the Yesha Council, touring settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Makarevich is portrayed as a liberal, anti-war musician, so his participation in an Israeli right-wing PR project is surprising. He moved to Israel in 2022 after opposing #Russia's invasion of #Ukraine.
Makarevich is seen touring places like #Hebron with his Israeli wife, marveling at the history and beauty of the settlements.
Given his anti-war views on Ukraine, one wonders if Makarevich has consciously decided to support the occupation. The video ignores the Palestinian perspective and the host lies about the circumstances of their absence from the city’s main shopping street.
In February 1994, Baruch Goldstein massacred Muslim worshippers at the Cave of the Patriarchs/Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron. In the aftermath of the massacre, on the orders of Israeli security forces, Palestinian vehicular movement on Shuhada Street was banned. This ban remains in place today.
Some shops on Shuhada Street were also closed down in 1994 and have not been allowed to reopen since. Movement restrictions were temporarily eased under the Hebron Protocol, but were then reimposed and tightened during the Second Intifada starting in 2000.
Today, Palestinian vehicular movement is still prohibited on Shuhada Street, and even Palestinian pedestrian movement is restricted in parts of the street. Meanwhile, Israeli settlers roam free.
