Aside from about three days of the #HaydenFire and one 20k acre blow up in the wilderness, this #fire season in central Idaho is going about like I expected back in spring.

September is right around the corner, with it comes cooler nights and better humidity recovery. (It was 36° at my campsite Saturday morning) large fire growth can still happen, but it's less common. The first snow in the high country isn't that far off...

I think we're getting a hell of a break this year.

Monsoonal moisture is moving into the #HaydenFire area. Not sure if any is hitting the ground yet, but ITD road cams to the south show actual widespread rain hitting the ground -- very rare for us in August. The increased humidity and (hopefully) rain should result in lower fire activity and give fire crews a chance to improve the completion of their confine & contain objectives.

#HaydenFire is now a confine & contain operation

like what I'm seeing, lots of blackline and smooth edges at preexisting roads/trails. Looks like burnouts blacked in gaps between control lines and the fire in several areas.

I think they've just about got this one effectively corraled. Though it'll be a while before it meets the requirements for completion and controlled likely won't be until a season-ending event.

Tomorrow's #SitRep is going to look far different than today's. I'm still camping with very sketchy cell service, but a quick look at the fire map shows a hellish day for our neighbors on the other side of the Rockies, fire everywhere...

I'll be back in civilization tomorrow and will do a deep dive on #HaydenFire, #ElkhornFire and all the new IA going on in surrounding areas.

#HaydenFire "GO" evacuation notices are being sent. I don't have full details yet, but I suspect zone 1 (and maybe zone 3) based on satellite imagery I'm seeing this afternoon. .

The shelter (Salmon Valley Baptist Church in Salmon) remains on standby to assist.

If you get the notice, please take it seriously.

I'll update once I know full extent of evacuation area.

I was just reviewing the 3-day #HaydenFire progression model (growth forecast). I won't post the map here as it requires a lot of context to understand and can look scary...

but as I expected, the primary concern is on the east flank with the potential for the fire to exit Jack Smith Gulch and hit open sage/grass flats. At which point, with a red flag wind, it could burn all the way to irrigated fields pretty damn quickly.

here's a look at last night's IR on that side.

*EVACUATION UPDATE*

The #evacuation shelter (the Baptist church) in Salmon has just been informed that the #HaydenFire is half a mile from triggering a "GO" evacuation order.

If you get that call, go. I've been on enough fire lines to know you don't want to try to save your property from an approaching fire in red-flag wind-driven conditions.

#Fire did receive some rain yesterday, which slowed growth in some areas. They tried to burn out the primary dozer line in Bear Valley / Kadletz creek but it was too wet at the time. May try again today; having black at the dozer line would greatly reinforce it.

based on ops maps, new dozer lines are being constructed on NE side of fire.

Red flag warning today.

#HaydenFire I expect they'll abandon the dozer and hand lines around Cooper Creek and opt for establishing East Fork Hayden Creek road as a fire line in the lower part of the drainage. The fire is less active in this area and there is an old burn on the NE side of the road here, so I'd guess it'd be a good place to hold.

Though, I suspect most resources will be focused on holding Bear Valley Creek and limiting growth past Bates Gulch.

I'll check back in an hour or two, gotta work some more.

now looking towards the east, the perimeter shows the fire reached Bates gulch. Assuming the fire hasn't already crossed the East Fork Hayden Creek road, I suspect it will become the new fallback line in the area of Swartz, Alder and Mill creek. Assuming fire crews have time to get in front of it there. If not... then the fire hits sagebrush and open range; it'll be quite the airshow if that happens.

Looking closer at the north flank #HaydenFire, you can see they've completed more dozer line, but haven't yet tied in with the rock peaks towards Helispot 78. I expect this is a very high priority today assuming it's safe to do so. I'd also expect firing operations to begin in kadletz creek today to reinforce this line. and maybe along bear valley creek road where it parallels the dozer line. If they can't hold the fire here, it'll make it to Hayden Basin, not good...

here's the full view, I'll post two more detailed areas of note in a moment.

When you see a smooth line perimeter like this it means that the perimeter is VERY much an estimate based on human observations from the air and ground rather than airborne IR imagery and GIS analysis.

An estimate like this is representative of the fire shape and location, but not very accurate at all.

This fire is (effectively) split into 3 separate fires.

a small fire on the SW side of the Lemhi backing toward the Pahsimaroi.

a very active North flank aggressively burning towards Bear Valley Creek (a fav fishing spot of mine)

and the east flank fire with extreme behavior that caused a multi-mile run yesterday.

that's a complex fire in complex terrain on the infamous SCNF

...I gotta do some (paying) work, back in an hour or two.

First as I said in another post, I expect this fire gets an upgrade to Type 1. I'd expect this order later today or first thing tomorrow.

Fire will likely reach the Bear Valley Creek / Kadletz Creek dozer contingency line later today. That should be interesting...

*SIGNIFICANT UPDATE*

#HaydenFire:

Fire is now estimated at 14,890 acres based on a perimeter *estimate* just uploaded.

This new perimeter confirms the VIIRS detections we were seeing at 3 am and matches the photos I geo-referenced this morning.

The wind event yesterday caused a 3-4 mile run adding 8,000-10,000 acres late yesterday.

Will need an IR flight for a more accurate size/map.

Some thoughts in the thread:

Based on all the information I'm seeing (especially in post above) for #HaydenFire... I fully expect an order for a Type 1 incident management team later today.

This fire is no longer tucked away in the mountains, residents are looking at a couple miles of sagebrush between them and visible flame. I highly doubt this stays type 2.

I've independently geo-referenced a photo of the fire from an hour ago. The photo shows trees torching in the head of Bates Gulch. This matches what I'm seeing on VIIRS satellite detections. The flame I geo-located puts the eastern flank of the fire 4.25 MILES from the most recent official perimeter and 2-3ish miles from this morning's ops map guesstimate.

This would be a VERY significant run overnight. And greatly complicates management #Fire

The IR mapping aircraft #N350SM is inbound #HaydenFire right now. I'm hoping for a nice clean run as they were unable to map last night due to weather and I know the fire had significant growth today including some containment lines being crossed. Though it's unclear which... I'm guessing an updated map will put us at roughly double the size currently being reported. I expect the #fire has not left my original threat area I drew a few days ago. We'll see. #IDwx #IDFire #Wildfire

#HaydenFire now estimated at 3,633 for a growth of about 500 acres yesterday. Nothing all that interesting on IR map compared to yesterday. Only thing of note on the Ops map this morning is the proposed dozer line I mentioned last night (pictured below) -- it's exactly where I had in the map I created last night. No other lines or anything really on the ops map.

And here are a couple of topo maps I made for the #HaydenFire.

I'm primarily concerned about growth to the East towards Mill Mountain. I suspect the fire will also finish burning the canyon up to May Mountain. I'm less concerned about growth towards May in the Pahsimeroi or towards the Lemhi River.

Looking at fuel moisture and predicted fire weather over the next week, I think there is a half-decent chance of keeping this fire pinned in this general area.
