It gets to be about this time of day here on deck, a nice, quiet evening with what looks to be a pretty sunset. Excellent reading weather. I can still hear Jagger working over his peanut butter and bone, getting through the layer of peanut butter to the tasty treats inside. I never thought I could miss a pet like this after losing one of my kids but damn, this is pretty friggen close to it.

My thanks to everyone. Jagger was, indeed, mah bud. I actually got him to sit still long enough a couple years ago so I could get this shot of him, sitting with the leaves during the fall. It’s one of my favorites of him, all happy af and everything. He was such a good boy.

I regret to inform those who know Jagger he is no longer with us. The decision was made today to put him to sleep because of a cancer diagnosis that gave him, at the most, maybe a couple weeks. It wasn’t an easy decision at all and my heart is breaking. Needless to say, the date 23 July, the last time in 2006 I heard my oldest son say “I love you dad” about a week before he was KIA in Iraq, now means that much more to me.

A little of this morning’s walk with Jagger. He’s 14 and showing his age more and more in different ways and sometimes, it tends to make this grumpy old retired Army NCO tear up. Then, he sees the leash and his eyes light up, there’s a renewed spring in his step and it’s like I can almost hear him saying “Oh boy oh boy oh boy! A walk! Oh boy oh boy oh boy! Let’s go!”

Had Jagger been looking out over the yard from on deck about a half hour ago, he woulda seen what I believe was a fox diddly boppin’ down the trail. I’m pretty sure it was a fox - coulda been a coyote. And yes - I’m no fan of his laying like that but he’s 14 so I reckon his “Give a fuck” is broken in that regard.

51 degrees in February here in the great northwoods of Wisconsin - I’ll take it! Jagger doesn’t think it sucks, either, but he’s got his bone so he’s good either way. The mug is a favorite - picked it up at the first Starbucks in Seattle in 2008. It’s excellent for hot tea.
