  1. At my work's annual meeting, we did an exercise of telling a colleague a difficult phrase in your native language.

    I chose bɔ́'əl ó wóː'ə, which they couldn't understand and didn't believe was English.

To many southern Brits, it is of course "bottle of water"!

  6. I'm fascinated with linguistics. My last post made me wonder..
Does anyone else notice that Gen Z English speakers tend to have a glottal stop in their speech, i.e. "certain" = "cer-in" and so on. I notice it regardless of their region, so it's not a regional accent.
As someone who had a mild speech impediment as a kid, I typically don't comment on speech, but admittedly listening to this drives me crazy.
    Maybe I'm just old. 😂

  11. I think, specifically it’s the increased use of the #GlottalStop that makes me sound “proper Manc”, I tend not to do that often. Tiredness (or maybe more accurately laziness when I’m tired) makes it more prominent.

    I don’t know.
    Or even care, honestly.

    I jus think it’s #interesting.

  15. I was trying to say "there are no seals in Seal Beach" -- "ʻAʻohe sila o Seal Beach" and my kumu corrected me because it came out like "ʻAʻohe sila ʻo Seal Beach." I need to get used to putting a #glide between the "a" of "sila" and the possessive "o," otherwise it becomes a name-indicator "ʻo". #speakhawaiian #olelohawaii #languages #glottalstop #okina

  19. My #1 problem trying to speak #Hawaiian is that my. Tongue. Wants. To. Put. A. Full. Glottal. Stop. Between. Every. Word. Especially when I am trying to speak clearly!!!! That is bad in Hawaiian because the glottal stop is a component of a word (or not), and you canʻt just throw them in there or you might change the meaning. #speakhawaiian #olelohawaii #languages #glottalstop #okina

  23. I’ve been getting accustomed to using #Hawaiian alphabetical order when looking things up in the Hawaiian dictionaries… it’s a little different than #English #alphabeticalOrder because all the vowels come first and all the words that start with ʻokina (indicating a #glottalStop) come last. My #hawaiianWordOfTheDay is “ʻā pele” == “lava flow”, but I don’t have a picture of a #lavaFlow so you get a picture of this dictionary page instead! :blobcatreading: #hwotd

  26. Three years ago (25 Nov. 2019), I tweeted one of my favourite revelations about glottal stops:

Let's take a moment to appreciate that there are two different vertical lines, which can represent the glottal stop /ʔ/, and they both have descriptive, diminutive names. I don't know which is cuter: the “little stick” (palochka, ⟨ӏ⟩ ) or the “little skip” (saltillo, ⟨ꞌ⟩ ).
