At my work's annual meeting, we did an exercise of telling a colleague a difficult phrase in your native language.
I chose bɔ́'əl ó wóː'ə, which they couldn't understand and didn't believe was English.
To many southern Brits, it is of course "bottle of water"!

Good to see Northern England getting more explicit recognition from the OED.
I was also delighted to be reminded of the existence of the word "apeth", which I have not heard in speech for decades, and to learn of its etymology; as a child, I thought it had something to do with apes!

Please tell me how you pronounce “route” and your area of origin.
As middle schoolers delivering newspapers in Marshalltown, Iowa, by buddy and I determined that our paper routes were “rowts,” rhyming with “out.” Other usages were mostly “root,” as in Nat King Cole’s “Route 66,” but delivery routes were “rowts.”
Thanks.

Today I learned about another handy to help with English pronunciation. This one is friendlier than Sounds of Speech, and it has a working website. Sounds of Speech has a mobile app but site is defunct because it used Flash. https://soundsamerican.net/. #english #inglês #englishpronunciation #efl #esl #languagelearning #englishteacher
