@therepository Maybe it's a good time to promote that #GatherPress is already capable of importing „The events calendar“ data. Just as an idea, if someone here is also active on the Post Status Slack.
-

Dear @andyfragen , I’m wondering if any plugin could provide its own betas through the „#WordPress Beta Tester“ plugin in any way. Wondering for a #GatherPress community.
-
Have you been locked in? Vendor locked in? By a #WordPress event plugin?
Now is the time to escape, tell me the plugin you like to escape from, as I’m working on importers for #GatherPress.

@DianaThompson @111 In my wildest dreams: A public announcement about the re-opening of the core sustainability team, funded by the money, that was recently given to meetup and can be saved now thanks to the community-powered sustainable alternative #GatherPress .
-
@DianaThompson @111 (Damn, sometimes #depression rules my sayings. I could have also answered in the first place:)
Hey, nice you are interested in one of the coolest event plugins in the #WordPress space! We the people - working on #GatherPress, not as sponsored contributors, but as volunteers next to family and job, do 💯 appreciate that! It‘d be great if you find the time took test the plugin, add your thoughts to open discussions or even contribute some time coding or in the weekly meetings.
-
@DianaThompson @111 Thanks for both of your replies!
I want to clarify, that the #GatherPress itself is ongoing; it was just yesterday that the main maintainer opened a PR with 4000+ lines changed. Things are moving, but silently and with no more public involvement, other than Claude code.
I still believe that GatherPress is already a matured alternative to the most of event-calendar functionality in w.org/plugins, but its lack of visibility AND missing people contributing, is its real problem. -
@111 @DianaThompson I can confirm #GatherPress is kind of stuck. But it’s far away from being an Automattic project.
I tried to contribute a lot to this project and idea, but for me personally it wasn’t a success story, even that I still try to flip the coin.
I wrote a lot of issues, created ideas, opened PRs, but I was not able (and willing) to join their weekly online meetings and so became ghosted more and more. I would have loved to contribute more.
-
@pintoch I needed some time to realise that your ideas and thoughts align perfectly, with what - I believe - not only #WordPress, but also #GatherPress needs, two projects, I tried to contribute to. With all the hassle, you described.
So here is my question (to everybody): How have you tried proposing a NEW governance model to your beloved #FOSS projects?
I really need to try.
-
@leobard @burners.at I had the same need and created an issue https://github.com/GatherPress/gatherpress/issues/682, would be cool if you would add your need here too, maybe we can get or create or solution for #GatherPress.
Until then I created myself a small helper plugin, which is referenced in the last comment. It isn’t perfect, but does the job for now.

On parlera Community, évènements, #GatherPress, WP Credits, Campus Connect (+chocolat suisse?😉🍫)

Congrats for the new website @leobard
I was wondering how you‘re doing the event slugs at @burners.at . Are you setting them manually?
I was just reminded about a #GatherPress idea about customising the event slug.
-
Some time ago I wanted to do the same for #GatherPress. But because the export-replace-paths-reimport steps seemed not very intuitive, I created a Playground to help.
https://github.com/carstingaxion/crud-the-docs-playground
Create a new repo from that template-repo, open the provided playground, create, edit and update your demodata. Save it using a special little button on the admin bar directly into a PR on your repo. Merge the PR.
You’ll get a ready prepared wordpress export stored in your repo.
-
I like it more transparent.
Just saying.

@tchambers Things that also come 2026 thanks to #NLnet:
#WordPress users will be able to create polls for the Fediverse.
WordPress in combination with #GatherPress will offer federated RSVP for events.
Interoperability of Events will improve, e.g. Mobilizon will be able to receive events from other applications.
#Lauti, an event management tool for medium sized communities, will join the Fediverse.
-
@lordmatt Cool and interesting article.
I like the idea with a custom comment type the most. It is the same way, that I suggested, how #GatherPress is handling RSVPs in the future.
And it can be done as a logged-in user or anonymously, like you described your AMA idea too. -

-
Absolutely @xgranade !
If you or anyone reading this, is still using #WordPress, I’ve a PR open for a while to bring subscribeable and downloadable iCals to #GatherPress and I would love to see some more people chime in for the need.
-
Dear #WordPress people,
If you are publishing Events or already know about or use #GatherPress, I’d like to hear your opinions.
I'm looking for feedback on a new block and would absolutely love, if you could take the time to open this in Playground, experiment with the new "Event Query" block AND share your findings!

Wow @krautpress cool, dass du #GatherPress benutzt!
Seit ich regelmäßig an dem Projekt mitwirke ist mir noch keine echte Website untergekommen, die es verwendet.

The Work Continues: What’s Next
Details will follow soon — but the work on events in the #Fediverse is far from complete. Key upcoming milestones include:
- Improvements and new features for the Event Bridge for ActivityPub plugin for WordPress
Continued development to maintain, fix issues, enhance, and expand functionality. - Work on Fediverse Enhancement Proposals (FEPs)
Ensuring a robust final status of FEP-8a8e and focus on recurring and irregularly scheduled events. - Support for event interoperability in other Fediverse applications
Contribute to other Fediverse applications and help them to explore and improve support forEventobjects. For example, @[email protected] has outlined a potential roadmap for Mastodon. - Contribution to GatherPress
Active involvement in the GatherPress project — a modern and truly FLOSS community oriented WordPress event plugin — to ensure full ActivityPub compatibility, including RSVP support and advanced federation features. - Community engagement and outreach
Participation in conferences, public talks, and direct conversations to foster knowledge exchange, gather feedback, and grow the ecosystem around federated events.
Additional updates and technical details will be shared soon. Input, testing, and collaboration from interested parties are always welcome. Or if you know any conferences we should attend, let us know.

@raphael_hemme #GatherPress is the name of an initiative by WordPress people, to create an alternative. It’s free and ever will be.
Since 6 months I’m contributing to that 5 year old project.
Ask me anything and give it a try: https://gatherpress.org -
GatherPress just celebrated its 5-year anniversary on September 18. That was the first commit I made to the project in 2019. It seemed only fitting that our anniversary was during the week of WordCamp US, where our plugin was officially recognized as a WordPress community project.
It was exciting walking in as a “Table Lead” at WordCamp US Contributor Day and finding the table I would manage with the GatherPress team that would be in attendance. In addition to that, we had a few folks from our team on Zoom, as well as some first time contributors that were participating virtually.
There was a lot of buzz about us on the floor. Some people were familiar, and others just finding out about it that day. Either way, it was exciting making progress on the plugin as well as the sidebar discussions about next steps of powering WordPress meetups on a WordPress.org network powered by GatherPress.
In the end, our first contributor day was a success. We had 5 new people contribute to the project, some of which had code merged that day. We also ended camp with a new #gatherpress channel in the Making WordPress slack. So if you are in that Slack, come checkout our channel and join us!

Would a #WordPress plugin with only block-variations instead of custom #blocks, also get this nice list of available blocks at the end of the plugin page on wordpress.org ?
Asking for a …. #GatherPress plugin.
-
Matt stated that #WordPress plugin authors should get all the tools to create cool plugins.
While I wait, I’m trying it on my own to create a code-reference with well-known UI and using #Playground.
And once again, for the super-duper-cool #GatherPress plugin (which you should absolutely try).
-
@dartiss Exactly, with the subtle difference, that your plugin uses a readme.txt, while for #GatherPress we wanted to go with a readme.md, which works as it should, except the video.
