  1. "The Texas governor’s pardon of a former Army sergeant who fatally shot a #BlackLivesMatter demonstrator undermines the state’s legal system and constitution and should be reversed, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

"Perry shot and killed #GarrettFoster during a 2020 protest in Austin. Perry was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2023, prompting immediate calls for a pardon from conservative figures. #Abbott issued the pardon and Perry was released from prison"

  2. Whitney Mitchell, who was engaged to Foster before his death at the hands of Perry, laid out her feelings about the pardon in a statement sent to the Observer.

“I loved Garrett Foster. I thought we were going to grow old together. He was the love of my life. He still is. I am heartbroken by this lawlessness,“ she said. “With this pardon, the Governor has desecrated the life of a murdered Texan and US Air Force veteran, and impugned [the] jury’s just verdict. He has declared that Texans who hold political views that are different from his—and different from those in power—can be killed in this State with impunity.”

  3. I'm going to be honest and say #DanielPerry is lucky I'm not #GarrettFoster's father, because there is nothing in this world that would save him from me if he wasn't in prison.
I'm fine with prison, because I believe in the social contract and don't believe in capital punishment, but if the state isn't going to honor justice, game on.

  4. …Unsealed court records revealed that he regularly shared #racist memes & threatening content in private msgs & social media posts, including descriptions of killing protesters & *minorities*.

  7. "For all the degeneracy on the political right in the Trump era, this is what I find most alarming — the dehumanizing of political opponents to the point where violence isn’t merely justifiable, it’s almost a moral imperative. Their opponents aren’t just wrong, they’re criminal."

  8. "Let’s be clear about what Abbott, Carlson and other MAGA types are advocating here. In pushing a pardon for Perry, they’re stating they believe that if someone plows his vehicle into a crowd of protesters, the protesters have no right to self-defense. They believe there should be no liability — criminal or civil — for deliberately striking protesters with a car."

  9. #Texas #Republicans are seeking to pardon #UnitedStates Army sergeant convicted of killing a #BlackLivesMatter protester in 2020.

On Friday, a jury found #DanielPerry, 28, guilty of killing #GarrettFoster, 27, during a demonstration in Austin. Perry is white, as was Foster.

Perry's attorneys argue he acted in self-defence, but prosecutors say he instigated the confrontation.

Governor #GregAbbott said he would pardon Perry as soon as an official request "hits my desk".

  10. #Texas Gov #GregAbbott has pushes to pardon of Army Sgt. #DanielPerry, who was convicted Friday of murdering #GarrettFoster during a 2020 #BlackLivesMatter protest. The judge hasn’t even handed down a sentence. In Texas, a gov can't pardon a man on his own, so Abbott has asked state board of pardons (whose members he appoints) to review the case.

This is some #racist b*******! A jury should (and has) determine the guilt of a man, NOT the Governor!

  11. The right-wing position is that everyone should be able to carry guns everywhere, and in fact should be encouraged to. And that it's silly to be afraid just because some guy has an AR-15 at the coffee shop or at a protest. But if the armed person is the wrong sort (like a BLM protester), then it's perfectly OK to shoot them, and if a jury convicts you the governor should pardon you. #DanielPerry #GregAbbott #GarrettFoster
