@alexpsmith Indeed! We need more fur seals on Mastodon.
Here's a video my wife took back in 2013 of the natural crèche for some of Kaikoura's fur seal babies, at the base of the waterfall along the Ohau Stream.
The species is also known as kekeno in NZ and Laura's video shows about 50 young keneno playfully diving and leaping about at the base of the waterfall.

#EmperorPenguins are marching toward #extinction. #Antarctica #furseals too
The species are now “#Endangered,” pushed to the brink by #climatechange in Antarctica
International Union for Conservation of Nature a network of about 17,000 #scientists and experts from over 160 countries maintains #IUCN Red List, tally of how threatened different species are in wild. “Endangered” status means the birds face “a very high risk of extinction in the wild.”

Spending time with these New Zealand fur seal pups is one of the greatest joys for me.
Curious, playful, and full of personality—each one is a reminder of what we’re protecting.#SealPups #Kaikoura #WildlifePhotography #ConservationPhotography #NewZealand #Nature #MarineLife #ProtectWhatYouLove #Canonphotography #FurSeals #Photography #Wildlifeconservation #SouthIslandNZ #OceanLife #Sea

✨ **A Truly Remarkable Comeback!** ✨
Over 400 adorable fur seal pups have been spotted at the Farallon Islands National Wildlife Refuge off the coast of San Francisco! 🦭 This heartwarming sight is a testament to decades of conservation efforts, starting with the 1911 Northern Fur Seal Treaty and strengthened by the 1972 Marine Mammal Protection Act. 🌊#GoodNews #FurSeals #WildlifeConservation #MarineLife #SanFrancisco #FarallonIslands

A young male Antarctic fur seal, named JOCA by biologists, and likely carried by Antarctic ocean currents, makes a rare appearance on Ipanema beach, #Brazil, earlier this week. Bathers watched from a safe distance as the marine mammal rolled in the sand, visibly tired but showing no apparent injuries.
