Hanmer NZHM → Kaikoura NZKI
Another leg in the Cessna 172, but this time with a glass cockpit. From Hanmer, I followed the mountain slopes all the way back to the coast, where an interesting approach to Kaikoura awaited me: mountains obstruct the final approach to Runway 23, requiring a fairly tight turn.

300mm over a day or two around #Kaikoura, New Zealand, a few weeks ago, and one river eroded a whole section of one of the two lanes of State #Highway 1. #Climate change is not a hoax. Humans can stop accelerating it if we have the #political will.

Climate change will ensure that the Kaikoura road keeps decaying, but there's really no viable alternative. The cost of ploughing a road through wild, mountainous terrain would be enormous.
The main trunk rail line runs alongside SHI so that would need to be relocated too. It would take decades and become one of NZ's biggest ever engineering projects. I doubt the country could afford it.
A simpler solution is staring us in the face. Coastal shipping is more efficient for freight and resilient to most weather events. It's the way freight used to work, before massive trucks stole the business.
When it comes to moving people, it wasn't long ago that we had daily ferries running from ChCh to Wellington. Moving demand to a combination of shipping and rail could reduce our over-reliance on this fragile stretch of road.

Today it's Kaikoura's turn to face the wild weather moving up the country. A state of emergency has been declared and evacuations have been ordered.
SH1 is closed between Cheviot and Kaikoura -- there are NO alternative routes available.

Ich habe aus dem Urlaub in #Neuseeland über 1000 #Vogelfotos mitgebracht (die offensichtlich unscharfen schon abgerechnet). Bis auf 2 Fotos konnte ich alle artgenau bestimmen.
Es sind über 50 verschiedene #Vogelarten. Eigentlich wollte ich mal eben schnell von jeder Art ein Foto veröffentlichen, aber es wird wohl etwas länger...
