I was wondering why today's date was nagging at me.

My grandmother died 50 years ago today.

She cultivated my love of books. She'd give me a book at every birthday and every Christmas.

I wouldn't be writing Captain Bara today if it weren't for her.

When I collect all of the stories into a book, maybe I should dedicate it to her.

I wonder how she would have reacted to having a book of gay furry fiction dedicated to her. Probably break her brain. Would it break her heart as well?

Books taught me how to understand the world and myself. Books helped me survive my teen years. Books gave me a refuge in bad times.

I'd like to think that she would have seen past the surface. Past the parts that would have upset her, because she was a product of her times. That she would have understood that she had given me the tools to express myself. The tools to let out the confusion and anger so it wouldn't stay bottled up inside. That that was the value of her gifts.

I have no way of knowing, of course.

I'm still thinking about you, Grandma. I hope I make you proud.

Question for #furry writers (and readers!) about age restrictions.

When I start publishing the Captain Bara stories (still about two months out), there will be the occasional explicit scene.

These scenes are only a few sentences long, but they will use crude slang terms to describe sexual acts.

I feel the story works better if I'm up-front about what the characters are doing. To quote the Zen of Python, "Explicit is better than implicit."

Anything I post to the Fediverse will be Content Warned with "sexual content" or "sexual descriptions" (or similar).

What I'm asking about here are AGE restrictions.

My opinion is if I give fair warning, the readers can decide for themselves if they are mature enough. All teenagers have already heard these terms and know exactly what they mean (and have probably seen live-action video of these acts). My brief textual descriptions cannot possibly "corrupt the youth" any more than they have already been corrupted.

Ignoring all of the political hysteria about age verification of web sites, am I "morally" obligated to prohibit access by minors to my website?

Likewise, if I collect these stories in a book, am I morally obligated to slap a label on the front that says "For sale to adults only, even though only 0.001% is naughty"?

Captain Bara is a capybara and a 20th Century tramp steamer captain.

The first stories take place in the exciting world of Prohibition-Era 1920s Seattle. Why does a pacifist, friend-to-all capybara take a job in the illegal and morally dubious business of rum-running? And does he live to regret it?

Originally, it was going to be a series of short stories. I've recently decided that the character development and story arcs work better as a novel. I will probably be releasing a few of the chapters early as teasers for the book. Stay tuned for news and (hopefully) excerpts.

So, as promised, here is a post about my current big passion project, that I've been working on since March of 2023: a story series called Mystic Heart Odyssey. It's an episodic (furry) adventure story set in a more primitive fantasy world, with a slow-burn gay romance subplot.

Lykou is an upbeat, friendly, and adventurous konuul (a wolf-husky hybrid, basically) that yearns to explore the world beyond his (somewhat physically isolated) tribe and see all that it has to offer. Kuna is a snarky, antisocial sereva (deer, more or less) with a very troubled past that's given him trust issues, among other things. The two end up meeting when they seek shelter in the same cave during a freak magical thunderstorm that comes out of nowhere. When they wake the next morning, they find that they've been magically transported far away. Though things start off rocky, they end up working together to try and find their way home, going on a long, grand series of adventures full of magic, monsters, and discoveries. Along the way they make a number of new friends- and a few enemies- and learn more about themselves and each other as they grow closer through their adventures.
