James Brown. Get up, I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine
So the Funky50 ends where it started with the Godfather of Soul & his urtext of funkiness, Sex Machine. The James Brown band delivers one of the greatest 5mins of funk ever. Its got that funky drummer, call & response vocals, stuttering guitar with that bubbling bass & a fabulously sparse production; yes 'the way I like it, that's the way it is'!

The 24-Carat Black. Ghetto Misfortune's Wealth
This classic of sparse funkiness is a great bit of spacey stuttering grooviness. Driven by a subtle & sinewy rhythm, with a meandering horn arrangement & showcasing some conversational vocals, this doesn't quite sound like anything else I've been listing.
Those who like a bit of acid jazz will recognise this from a sample used by the Young Disciples on Step Right on.

Johnny Guitar Watson. A Real Mother For Ya
Johnny Guitar Watson delivers a killer funky groove, with a fab rhythm arrangement & some great horn stabs alongside Watson's usually laid back vocals. Edging towards disco this retains the funkiness that typifies Watson's best work & if you like this, check out Superman Lover, his other funky masterpiece. What a groove!

O Jays. For the Love of Money
Kicking off with one of the great funky guitar intros of all time, this classic bit of funkiness from the O Jays shows that Philadelphia International Records could produce brilliant funk records alongside their signature lush soul. A fabulous stuttering, guitar driven bit of political funk, with a great sax solo in the middle, this is just brilliant! Enjoy.

Stevie Wonder. Superstition
Well, of course, the Funky50 would not be complete without this stone cold classic from Stevie Wonder. The immediately recognisable drum intro, the fabulous horns, the funky keyboards & of course Wonder's vocals (and lyrics) make this an absolutely essential record for any funk collection. You'll have heard it so many time but once more is always good!

Sir Joe Quarteman & Free Soul. (I Got) So Much Trouble in my Mind
This bit of funkiness was rediscovered during the rare groove movement of the late 1980s, and its a great extended funk workout. A fabulous guitar led, funky rhythm, great horn stabs & Quarteman's strident vocals drive this forward for over 6 minutes of driving funk.
(He also recorded the great New Orleans funk influenced Thanks Dad, if you want more!)

Lonnie Liston Smith. A Chance for Pieace
Lonnie Liston Smith's career saw him move from soul jazz to a much funkier fusion of soul, funk & jazz, and this track is a great example of his funky touch. Combining a chanted vocal, some great funky rhythm playing & of course some jazzier soloing, its a fabulous mash-up of jazz & funk.

Maceo & the Macks. Cross the Tracks (We Better Go Back).
As the Funky 50 nears its end, we're back with the James Brown community; Maceo Parker, his sax player assembled a group of JBs to record this relentlessly funky cut, with honking sax, chanted vocals & a great funky rhythm. When we're getting funky, James Brown is never that far away.

The Meters. Fire on the Bayou
The Meters have been central to New Orleans funk for decades & this great bit of stuttering funk is a fabulous example of their signature sound. The New Orleans funky shuffle (finding its origins in the Mardi Gras parades) has been massively influential on funk more generally. Interestingly, unlike much funk, no horns here, but plenty of funky guitar to make this a classic.

Kool & The Gang. Jungle Jazz
Before Kool & The Gang were a major disco act they were for some time standard holders for the funk. This great (and much sampled) bit of funkiness is an instrumental (with some chanted vocals) take on their Jungle Boogie (on the soundtrack of Reservoir Dogs) and is a masterclass in how to mash up jazz soloing with heavy duty funk rhythm making - just genius!

Dawson Smith. I Don't Know If I Can Make It
This fabulous slice of funkiness is driven by a great stuttering rhythm section, with some great vocals & horn stabs (and a great sax solo). I first came across this as part of the surge of funk rediscoveries allied to the 'rare groove' scene & it confirms how much obscure funk is out there to be discovered; obscure perhaps, but as funky as the best of the well known stuff!

Heatwave. Ain't No Half Steppin'
Heatwave were a key part of the British soul wave of the late 70s & this is a cracking bit of funkiness (especially on the extended 12" version). Written by Rod Temperton (soon to become Michael Jackson's chief songwriter), this oscillates between funky rhythm & lusher sections, but throughout the funk it in effect & it is just brilliant. There is no half-stepping'!

Wille Hutch. Try It, You'll Like It
Sounding a bit like Curtis Mayfield this great bit of funkiness from Willie Hutch offers a fluid rhythm section & great horn arrangement. There's also a touch of the New Orleans funk about it, but Hutch makes it very much his own. And the reason it sounds like it might come from a blaxploitation soundtrack... Hutch scored a couple not too longe before recording this little gem.

The Fatback Band. Yum Yum
This bit of funk from the Fatback Band is a great slice of chant-based funkiness, with its burbling rhythm, guitar-led melody line & great party feel. Fatback always were a party band, and that party starts here!
And of course, if you like this you'll also be wanting to check out their classic '(Are You Ready) Do the Bus Stop), more recently sampled for Chaka Khan's Like Sugar

Dr John. Right Place, Wring Time
New Orleans stalwart Dr John knows a few things about New Orleans funkiness, and this track demonstrates what he can do. Great stuttering rhythm, gruff vocals & the backing of a couple of Neville Brothers made this Dr John's biggest hit, and you can see why; just under three minutes to deliver a funky vibe unlike any other.

Marvin Gaye. 'T' Plays it Cool
This bit of funkiness is from Marvin Gaye's soundtrack to blaxploitation movie Trouble Man. With its stuttering synth base, great shuffle rhythm & sparse production, alongside some great soloing, it shows why its always worth checking out blaxploitation soundtracks for lesser known funky vibes.

War. Me & Baby Brother
I was spoilt for choice in choosing a funky vibe from War, but decided I'd go for this slice of muscular funk. Great relentless rhythm playing, counterpointed with some great organ work (replacing the normal funk horns) and backing chanted vocals to produce a dynamic bit of funkiness.
You might also check out Low Rider or Galaxy for different versions of War's funk, both great in different ways.

Aaron Neville. Hercules
This great piece of political funk from the Neville Brothers (backing brother Aaron) is a wonderful swirling bit of mesmeric music making. The relaxed shuffle rhythm driven by a lovely piano line, backs a set of thoughtful political lyrics, again demonstrating how the funk can be a vehicle for protest music. A piece of sublime genius - enjoy!

Brick. Good High
from its slight echo of the theme to Bullitt in the intro, this infectious bit of funk from Brick has a great springy rhythm laced with a fabulous horn arrangements. The chanted vocals, some strings & a bit of start-stop funkiness get the whole package moving to a great danceable groove.

Earth Wind & Fire. Saturday Night
This bit of funk from EWF edges towards their later disco output but retains a great funk sensibility. A great rhythm allied to some fabulous horn section work & EWF's usual vocal arrangements, make for a (perhaps) poppier feel, but it's still got that funkiness that gets it included here. Just joyful & a real floor filler!

Parliament. Mothership Connection (Star Child)
As promised another slice of PFunk & this classic track from Parliament is a great example of the complex, multilayered funk of the PFunksters. A burbling, funky rhythm has a chanted vocals, alongside spoken commentary, a great slice of horn section & that all important spaceyness we'd expect from George Clinton & the gang... yup, the Mothership Connection is here.

Chocolate Milk. Girl Callin'
This is a great bit of relentless funkiness from the lesser known Chocolate Milk (although you may know their Action Speak Louder than Words). With chanted vocals, a funky rhythm section & (once again) great horns stabs, this little mid-tempo gem always get me grooving.
