Music from the 1970s that remans timeless, no.24
Taste of Honey. Boogie Oogie Oogie (12"/LP version)
I make no apologies for including Taste of Honey's disco classic here (it also appeared in the Disco posts), its a joyous bit of dance music. Janice-Marie Johnson & Perry Kibble offer an infectious arrangement with trilling guitar riffs & a bass solo with a great rhythm arrangement. Of course disco was big in the mid to late-70s, so here it is.

Now that the 50 Disco Classics as concluded... there will be a short break in recommendations....
I have been wondering about a short series of recommendations of funk & soul compilation LPs to look out for... or possible a series of 70s classics for nostalgia listening?

Abba. Dancing Queen
Many 70s groups produced limp & disposable disco tracks, but Abba's Dancing Queen remains a floor filling classic. While there's no extended version (although occasionally I use two copies on the decks to extend its length), it is just under 4mins of dancing fun. From the piano intro, to the singalong chorus, the full-on production is infectious & a great place to finish disco classics

Herbie Hancock. Tell Everybody (LP/12" version)
Herbie Hancock really was a musical chameleon & his various forays into disco are like all his other cross-genre experiments, fascinating. Tell Everybody is perhaps his standout dance track, with its vocoder vocals, syndrums, but also some great jazz-funk playing. I love this, it doesn't sound quite like anything else; its a stone cold classic bit of disco; joyous!

The Players Association. Turn the Music Up (LP/extended version)
The experienced session musicians of the Players Association knew what they were doing when they recorded this disco classic. With its shuffle rhythm, jangling guitars, burbling keyboards & insistent horn section, it assembles all the components of disco & delivers a joyous celebration of dancing & disco itself. Not ground-breaking but still great.

SOS Band. Take Your Time (Do It Right) (12" version)
Before their global Jam & Lewis produced hits in the 1980s, the SOS Band worked with Fred Wesley to produce this disco classic with a great horn driven, percussive rhythm arrangement backing the band's ensemble vocals. Alongside the funky keyboard riffing & early electronic percussion this bubbles along nicely, getting your feet tapping & shoulders swaying.

Mary Jane Girls. All Night Long (LP version)
This great Rick James produced early 80s disco classic by the Mary Jane Girls has an irresistible bump & grind, funky disco rhythm arrangement, backing some wonderful soulful ensemble vocal from the MJGs. James' production is sparse & while utilising the (then) new electronics, doesn't let them dominate the groove, and there's a great sax solo to complete the package!

TS Monk. Bon Bon Vie
Driven by a much sampled rhythm hook this lesser know disco classic is a bouncy bit of energetic dance music. With its slightly jazzy instrumental elements (the band was led by Thelonius Monk's drummer son) and vocoder solo its an unusual mash-up of influences but works rather well. Enjoy

Third World. Now That We've Found Love (12" version)
Moving from their normal reggae repertoire, Third World made a major disco hit from an earlier O Jays (Philadelphia Int.) hit. With its percussive rhythm arrangement (retaining a reggae sensibility) and great call & repose vocals this is a fabulous feel good dance record, that remains a personal favourite (and a classic DJ set finisher). Great stuff.

The Emotions. Best of my Love
Produced by Earth Wind & Fire's Maurice White, Best of my Love has that unmistakable EWF sound, backing some great vocals by the Emotions. Its percussive rhythm track, with those EWF-like horn stabs alongside a great bit of start-stop arranging makes this a stone cold dance classic.

Hi Tension. Hi Tension (12" version)
This great bit of British 70's disco is a classic rhythm driven dance track. Coming out of the mid-70s's British soul scene Hi Tension hit the UK charts with the stuttering disco chant complete with sax solo & great burbling keyboard, alongside one of my favourite vocal breaks... 'bless the funk' indeed! Simple but very effective

The Crusaders. Street Life (12" US disco remix version)
Another successful mix of jazz sensability with a disco rhythm. With guest vocalist Randy Crawford, the Crusaders' global hit offers a great disco rhythm with some great soloing, ensemble horn punctuation & beat breaks in the 12" US remix. The Crusaders had always had an eye on the dance floor so their successful excursion into disco is no surprise.

Shalamar. Night to Remember
This classic 80's disco/dance tune typifies the Solar sound (LA's key disco record label). Its mix of pop & disco driven by a brittle/hard drum sound sums up where early 80s disco was about. This marks the beginning of the more mechanical/technological disco sound which was already shifting dance music away from disco, but here is constrained enough to deliver a great dance record.

KC & the Sunshine Band. Queen of Clubs
This bit of proto-disco was one of the first disco records I ever heard, dating from the period when up-tempo soul/dance had yet to be termed 'disco'. Its a great, short stomping dance track with some fabulously insistent horns & George McRae contributing high vocals KC couldn't manage himself. Another track showing disco's antecedents in the early 70s & the form's roots

Jacksons. Blame it on the Boogie
This dance classic from the Jacksons was part of their late 70s revival and comes complete with dance moves - Sunshine, Moonlight, Good Times, Boogie; you'll have done them if you've been at that sort of disco night! Its a joyous bit of disco, with classic Jacksons vocals, a great bouncy percussion heavy rhythm arrangements & plenty of horns, especially in the 12" version.

Rose Royce. Car Wash (LP/extended version)
The disco classic the launched so many dance nights, Car Wash from the initial hand claps to the string driven theme & the great vocal, is disco gold. Taken from the film of the same name, Car Wash is feel good, bouncy disco that is a guaranteed floor filler. A great sparse production with call & response vocals will fill you with joy (at the car wash); just brilliant!

Candi Staton. Young Hearts Run Free (LP version)
Candi Staton's disco classic is infused with soul & heartbreak. Driven by a lush soulful production, Staton's gruff vocals are punctuated by some great horn riffing & string emphases. What always amuses me is how many weddings I have DJ'd where this has been a request; have they listened to the lyrics, its an anti-marriage song! But still a great disco record.

The Whispers. And the Beat Goes On (12" version)
Not be confused with the 60's Sonny & Cher hit, Whispers bit of latter Salsoul disco is another disco track that uses dance as a metaphor for another message (albeit secondary to the actual dancing). Driven by a great clockwork-like rhythm, this stomper has it all; trilling guitar riffs, string & horn punctuation & that funky keyboard with a sing-a-long chorus.

Boney M. Daddy Cool
I have a soft spot for cheesy disco megastars Boney M, and Daddy Cool perfectly encapsulates why at their best they're brilliant. With its great rhythm track, bubbling synth bass line, sing-along lyrics/vocal performance & great string/horn punctuation, this remains a pop-disco classic; I defy you not to smile while you're listening to it.... You'll be crazy like a fool

Michael Jackson. Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough (12"/LP version)
Nowadays often marginalised due to revelations about his private life, this classic Michael Jackson track, produced by Quincy Jones remains a stone cold disco classic. The slow start, the stuttering rhythm arrangement, the swirling strings and of course Jackson's vocals all work to make this infectious & eminently danceable - ooooo!

Gloria Gaynor. Never Can Say Goodbye (LP/extended version)
Before the global hit I will Survive, Gloria Gaynor was already a disco diva, with Never Can say Goodbye as her signature song. Now overshadowed by her subsequent success, it remains a great disco canter through an earlier Jackson Five hit. Its insistent up-tempo mid-70s early disco production is a great showcase for Gaynor's great vocal performance.

George Benson. Give Me the Night (LP/extended version)
While many jazz musicians produced great funk tracks, the interaction of jazz & disco was a lot less successful. However, this classic by George Benson is a stand-out exception. Combining a great guitar-led groove, Benson's relaxed vocals (including some scat singing), and a lush production this is a great slice of disco floor-filling danceability.

Al Hudson & the Soul Partners. You Can Do It (extended version)
Unsurprisingly lots of disco records are about dancing (as is this series, really), so here's another one. Al Hudson's disco-shuffle classic offers a great rhythm with chanted vocals and (as always) some great horn stabs. Here, there's no message other than to dance, but the music really does help you do it. A simple but effective floor filler.

Barry White. Never Gonna Give You Up (LP/full length version)
This Barry White track is (another) lower tempo disco classic, showing disco doesn't have to be franticly paced to get you dancing. This has it all, White's lush production, the heart-felt gruffly delivered vocals, and an insistent rhythm section delivering a masterclass in disco swaying with a touch of jazz sensibility. Its irresistible....
