(Manouk Borzakian)

  3. RIP #FredricJameson

It's been a number of years since I read his work, but his book Postmodernism Or The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism was a huge influence on my understanding of the phenomenon at university. In fact, my overall understanding of Marxism as applied to cultural studies pretty much rested on that book.

  4. RIP Fredric Jameson, if not St.Peter, maybe at last the Stanford Encyclopedia finally will grant an entry.

"Postmodernism, he said, was special in that it signified the commoditization of culture itself, replacing history and progressive visions with irony, cynicism and pastiche, or mixing and matching cultural artifacts and forms without respect to their historical contexts.

"It meant, he wrote in “The Cultural Turn: Selected Writings on the Postmodern, 1983-1998,” published in 1998, that “our entire contemporary social system has little by little begun to lose its capacity to retain its own past, has begun to live in a perpetual present and a perpetual change that obliterates tradition.”

  6. Seeing credible reports the Fredric Jameson has passed away today at the age of ninety. RIP, and condolences to his friends and family.

He was a pivotal figure in literary criticism. We spoke about him just last week on the podcast as well. Writing in 1989, his critical eye caught the trends and challenges that we are still dealing with today, unabated. Rest well.
