In 1875, Captain Grant Marsh pushed the steamboat Josephine farther up the Yellowstone than any vessel before it, carving its name into a cottonwood tree near what’s now Billings. Built to guard against a war that went around it, Fort Missoula became home to Buffalo Soldiers, a bicycle-riding infantry corps, and later a WWII detention camp holding Italian and Japanese internees. Its brick buildings still stand along the Bitterroot, holding one of Montana's most layered military histories.
