Needing a little brain switch off after a stressful day, Four Against Darkness came off the bookcase. Solo RPG circles are talking a lot about the new edition but I've never really understood the hype behind the game. It's small f fine as What's Good Games used to say but it scratches an itch for an hour. It also has a hideous cover which detracts from my enjoyment far more than I feel comfortable admitting as a librarian

When it comes to #SoloRPG play, it seems most people either play dedicated solo games like #IronSworn or #4AD, or they're playing some rules-light yet traditional #TTRPG like some #OSR variant.
Meanwhile, I'm over here playing #PathFinder2e solo. Granted, I only play with one PC. If I had a full party, I'd probably go with something lighter. I do enjoy the occasional #FourAgainstDarkness game.

I am so glad it is not just me! 😅
I recently got interested in solo rpgs and read a few rule books, among them "Four Against Darkness". And at least for the moment, I completely bounced off of it, due to the "structure" (lack thereof) and contradictions in the rules.
But I am still interested in it, and will try it out at least once at some point!

Finally got to play a "game" of #FourAgainstDarkness on my graph paper notebook, it was fun! It took me around 2 hours to finish this dungeon, having the room generation rolls in the middle of the book and the rolls for what happens after entering the rooms in the back is very impractical, I wasted some time flipping pages but what are you gonna do. I didn't make too many mistakes either this time, although I rolled on the vermin table instead of the minions one a couple of times, oops.

Finally got to play my first #FourAgainstDarkness game, what a mess, I forgot to add defense bonuses for shield and armor but still managed to get out of the dungeon with most of the party alive — only the rogue died. Being a stickler I started from scratch trying to better follow the rules for the next game, the results? I failed to save versus a Medusa's gaze and my whole party perished...
Here's the 2nd dungeon, I didn't have graph paper so I draw my dungeon using a website ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

One thing that I've been thinking about including in my #FourAgainstDarkness #SoloRPG supplement is a personality and love/relationships system for PCs and NPCs. A system where, as your PCs interact more and more with NPCs, you get to know their personality. This means that aspects of their personality are randomized at the table as you interact with them, then made permanent. Perhaps they'll end up being compatible with your PCs, or perhaps it wasn't meant to be?

I'm facing an interesting challenge with this project. I want my #FourAgainstDarkness sandbox generator supplement to have something... unique. Something which makes it special. But I'm not yet sure what that would be. I have procedures for generating hexmaps and settlements now. One option could be to also have a subhex map generator for a more zoomed in view, like an outdoor dungeon if you will. We'll see. I'll probably do that, but I feel like I also need something more.

Despite its apparent simplicity, #FourAgainstDarkness continues to intrigue me. Now, I'm writing rules I call #FourAgainstTheSandbox which allows for overland #HexMap generation as you explore. I also want to write rules for generating settlements that you can find or build yourself as a management and worker placement minigame. Basically, I want simple rules that allows for the creation of an entire sandbox with landscapes, settlements, and dungeons.

@christian next category would be gm-less storygames. Afaik many of those start at 1-2 players or can be adapted to work like that. But I don't know too many (others, jump in!).
There's also some made specifically for two players, like #StarCrossed.Solo stuff can also be great for couples. In addition to those you named,
I have also done "choose your own path" books with my gf. There's a load of those around. If you like something more "boardgamey", maybe take a look at #FourAgainstDarkness.

I've recently gotten back into playing the solo tabletop game Four Against Darkness.
This game seems to model itself after early DND, with the simple dungeons, and variety of monsters and traps, as well as the constant vulnerability (especially against Medusa!). I love that it can be played solo or multiplayer. I also love the artwork as well.

#fouragainstdarkness is also great in duo - we currently play coop board game style (i.e. no GMing or storytelling) to recap the rules. Probably will do it more #ttrpg style for the next adventure afterwards (which will most likely be The Darkness Of Kokras Tharn.
Man, I like the game, but the book is so badly structured. You have to search around the book for something all the time. Would be even a lot worse without the printed table pages I prepared 😣

@justintime Se vuoi stare sul fantasy, invece, puoi guardare “Four Against Darkness” di Andrea Sfiligoi, edito in italiano da MS Edizioni.

@JoshP Thanks! Inline Scripts is the core of my setup. That and the TTRPG Statblocks I picked up from your videos. The tables are working well. I have pretty much all of the #FourAgainstDarkness mechanics rolling within #Obsidian with buttons. A future plan is to rewrite my functions to be flexible enough to roll results or accept my roll input to keep some hands on with real dice rolls. I’ve spent money on pretty dice, I need to actually use them!

A weekend of putting #FourAgainstDarkness into #ObsidianMD to facilitate my solo sessions. Finally playable after three restarts as I learn Obsidian, Obsidians plug-ins, and remember & expand on my JavaScript. I already have notes for modifying my scripts, but want to get some actual use in play before the next refinements! 🗿 #ObsidianTTRPG #ttrpg #sologaming

My party survived their first dungeon in #FourAgainstDarkness #sologaming #ttrpg
I almost thought they were all gonna die on the second chamber where they faced a level 5 Minotaur (they are all level 1) and Sebastian miscast the sleep spell.
Clara (warrior), Inah (cleric), Zix (rogue), and Sebastian (wizard) are now licking their wounds and counting their loot.
