  1. I'm a big fan of "talking pet" videos with the sound buttons. Curious, but even a tiny starter kit is expensive. But in Goodwill I found a set of 8 knock-off buttons for under $10! The experiment begins! She's very curious, but the "push button with paw" training proves to be surprising hard. Think she will figure it out fairly soon.

  2. Interested in animals who use buttons to communicate? Skeptical? Want to learn more? I warmly invite you to join me this evening (March 19 at 8:00 PM ET) for an interview with Bunny the Talking Dog and her human, Alexis Devine, author of I AM BUNNY. eventbrite.com/e/mary-robinett?

  3. #FluentPet Day 10: it’s going to be a long haul, Zoe’s still vaguely interested, sniffs the buttons, but I think she’s a long way from trying to press them. Also today the app is telling me the base is offline so I have to figure out how to get it connecting again (hopefully without completely resetting it).

  4. Breaking news! #SingaporeGangsterCat pressed a talking button and this is the first time I've been sure he did it on purpose!

He's been ignoring them lately, so I gave him a new set of words a week ago. And today he very clearly pressed the "sayang" button when he wanted more play!

If you know Malay or Singlish, you know that he pressed the wrong button. "Sayang" does not mean "play", it means "love" or "caress".

  5. Me: I don't need any more #FluentPet buttons, #SingaporeGangsterCat has only managed three button presses in three months.

Also me: Ooh, black edging pieces. Kirei! fluent.pet/collections/all-acc

    I have a problem, I know I do.

  6. ZOMG #SingaporeGangsterCat just did it! He pressed a talking button! The one for "Play!" It took him almost 6 weeks!

I don't know if it was a fluke, but we got a great play session out of it anyway.

I can't wait for him to do it again!

  7. #SingaporeGangsterCat still seems profoundly uninterested in the #FluentPet buttons. But I'm rereading How Stella Learned to Talk now, and it seems even a clever puppy took two weeks to show signs of noticing them. And my cat is not a fast learner, except in extremis. It took him over a year to use the cat door for my bedroom, since the door was always propped for him. So I'll have to be prepared for a similar time frame here.

  8. Made a couple of changes in #SingaporeGangsterCat's #FluentPet setup.

    1. I changed "outside" to "open window". It will be much less tiring for me to follow through on that one whenever he's interested. And we haven't been able to do outside time at a time that works for both him and me lately.

    2. I have distributed the three buttons to appropriate locations. Since he's not going to be combining words meaningfully any time soon, we don't need to centralise them yet.

  9. I have belatedly gotten round to setting up my first few #FluentPet buttons for teaching #SingaporeGangsterCat how to talk.

I have never seen him so uninterested in anything in my life. Oh well, it's only day 1.

I heard about these things from @maryrobinette's talented cat Elsie, and the very readable book How Stella Learned to Talk by Christina Hunger. fluent.pet/

  10. I'm a big fan these days of videos of "talking" cats. They've been trained to use sound emmitting buttons assigned words to communicate. It's fascinating to watch over time as they develop skills. One of my favorites is Elsie, cat of writer (and many other things) @maryrobinette. Though I usually watch on #Instagram but you'll find at least some some of her videos on Mary Robinette's timeline. Go watch. We'll discuss.

  11. Fallen down the rabbit-hole of #FluentPet (those buttons so supposedly dogs and cats can "talk" to you a bit) and now I want a set. Yeah, I'm that mess. Anyone have one?
