...he searched hither and thither for a fortnight, till at last he found that island, which was an island indeed with the sea over it and around it and beneath it. There dwelt the red-haired ocean-nymphs in glittering palaces among the sea-flowers...

#Celtic #MythologyMonday: #FinnmacCool is depicted as a magical, benevolent giant. In a #Manx Gaelic tale, Fionn and the Buggane (a Manx huge ogre-like creature) fought at Kirk Christ Rushen. As Finn fled across the sea, the buggane tore out one of its own teeth and hit Fionn with it. The tooth fell into the water and became a chicken rock, and Fionn cursed the tooth and explained why it was a danger to sailors.

#FairyTaleTuesday: The #Irish heroine Ailna surrounded #FinnMacCool and his musician pal Dáire with a druid`s fog so that they could not find their way home. When the Fianna were finally able to locate Fionn, the wily Conan slipped a magical drinking horn that would restore health and strength to Fionn so that, strengthened, he was able to break his bonds and escape.

#Fionn Mac Cumhaill and the Fianna came upon the mouth of the #CavesOfKesh, before which sat three hags of evil and revolting aspect. Drewing near they found themselves suddenly entangled in strands of the yarn which the hags had spun about the place like the web of a spider, and deadly faintness and trembling came over them, so that they were easily bound fast by the hags and carried into the dark recesses of the cave.

Deceived by the splendid sight of Midac`s palace that was surrounded by magical rowan trees, #FinnMacCool entered and made himself comfortable in the grand banquet hall. Midac came in, stared at them, and departed without a word. It was then that Fionn and his warriors realized that a trap had been set. They had been deceived by a glamour and were really being held hostage in a crude shack. One after another of the #Fianna warriors came to their rescue, with Diarmait finally lopping off Midac’s head.

"Nearer and nearer the music came, then ceased; but Fionn, gazing steadily before him, became aware of a gigantic figure standing some distance away, like a darker blot on the starlit darkness of the night ... Then through the darkness came a shaft of flame, blown from the enchanter's mouth, and Fionn raised his shield to catch it."
