  1. So I had six dark-eyed juncos under the feeders today, crushing the previous record of four.

  2. The 2024/25 #FeederWatch season came to a close today. Here is the data for my last count of the season:
    data.feederwatch.org/pfw/count
We had 24 species & 79 individuals this week. Over the 6 seasons I have been involved, we have made 147 counts & recorded 38 species. BTW all the Juncos finally left for the summer just as the counts were ending. Have already signed on for next season. Now I'm putting away my "Bird" hat for the season and dusting off the "garden" hat.

  3. This is the first year I've seen our Robins consistently at our suet. In prior years you might see one curious but mostly unsuccessful and that was it for the year.

This year I see them pecking our upside down suet often, and with a good bit of success.

    I wonder what has changed?

  4. Hey, frozen and/or snowed in friends. It’s a hard time to be a bird out there.

If you can, your feathered friends need food, but more importantly they could use some unfrozen water. They can eat snow, but melting it lowers already low body temps and burns calories needed for survival.

BONUS: You’ll likely be the only game in town and get quite a show 🤩

  5. The local goldfinches are starting to come back to color. Though right now they are kind of hilarious looking. This photo sucks. I’m still figuring out how to use the new camera.

  6. A couple of yellow-bellied sapsuckers stopped by the feeders today. The Merlin app says they are rare around here. All this snow has definitely increased activity. #FeederWatch

  7. I have a heated bird bath sitting on an inverted, shallow, round plastic planter. When I fill the bath, I always let some water run over the side and fill the little channel of the rim of the planter. A chipmunk loves to drink from that and it's one of my favorite things about my setup. #FeederWatch

  8. We had a nice afternoon at the #KC conservation center doing #ProjectFeederWatch. Nothing super exciting but the autumn backgrounds sure made the photos fun.

  9. Do you fine folks know about Cornell's #FeederWatch program? Essentially you sign up, (or go to a participating location) to identify and count birds at/near feeders.

We are not a #ProjectFeederWatch station, but there is a nice feeder outside my window that I get to watch while WFH all day.

  10. Cornell's #ProjectFeederWatch starts again in November. 🤩

If you are interested in #birding or supporting #FeederWatch and don't know where to begin, I'd recommend taking this self-paced course offered in partnership with Cornell.

    60+ birds for $59.99! That's less than $1/bird!

  11. Our backyard bird feeder is suddenly overrun by house sparrows, house finches, European starlings and other less desirable species.

We've quickly gone from pretty natives to ugly invasive species.

Sorta feels like we're operating a crack house. Is this just a seasonal thing?

  12. We had a super productive morning at our local conservation center for Cornell’s #ProjectFeederWatch. A nice bit of diversity! That red-headed woodpecker 🤩

  13. This female red-bellied woodpecker chowing down on the suet block. Photo by my partner, who is generously allowing me to share. Look at that tail bracing her for all the good eating! #birding #birdersofmastodon #woodpecker #feederwatch

  14. 2 hawks - not sure if Cooper or Sharp-Shinned - on a telephone pole in our front yard. The ravens were NOT happy to have them there and are now escorting them out of the area!

  15. @redcrew Not every day, no. When I fill the feeders, I put out a tin can full of "Don Roberto Game Bird Food" & the ravens seem to have discovered it. It's not unusual to see 40+ quail, but this many ravens is new. They started doing this a month or so ago, so I don't know what changed. #Feederwatch tells me "that's an unusual number of ravens". Indeed it is!

  16. This week's #FeederWatch counts are now posted for my site. We had 18 species and 104 individuals this time! Our local Cooper's Hawks have been stopping by regularly also. Link to data here:
