"Seated Young Woman with an Amber Necklace," Henri Matisse, 1942.
Matisse (1869-1954) was in many ways the father of modern art. A painter, sculptor, and printmaker, he pioneered many new styles and techniques that others followed.
Done in the sunset years of his painting career (his health was restricting his ability to paint), it nonetheless shows some of his strengths. While he doesn't go for exacting detail, there's still a lot of precision in how he depicts the folds of the dress and uses brushstrokes to illustrate the hair. The bold colors against the back background make it pop, and the pattern scratched into the black background make it something graphic, rather than just a backdrop.
Matisse had undergone cancer surgery that almost killed him, and left him dependent on a wheelchair and often bedridden. By now was beginning to shift more to paper cutouts and collage as an art medium. But this lady with her friendly face shows he still had what it took.
