Don't know why, but as I was working on the Ravenforge Kingdom for Spirit's Blessing, I had a weird thought. Why not give the royal family a familiar called Sir Barksley the Concerned. And by the time the story starts, we're on like Sir Barksley the 80th. Not that the royal family knows that. They just believe that the original Barksley's spirit kept inhabiting one of his kids after he passes away.

Any creature that is intelligent (beastmen, spirits, holy beasts, familiars, etc) can talk. It may not be through vocal cords, but can use magic or telepathy to convey their thoughts.

The Ravenforge kingdom being a kingdom that values freedom above all else is one of the few kingdoms in Spirit's Blessing where underworld organizations can operate with the kingdom's blessing as long as they don't target law abiding citizens
