  1. Eureka Day tomorrow (it's the 170th anniversary). IMO the Bracks government back in 2004 should have made 3 December a public holiday, could've ditched the Queen's Birthday to compensate.

  4. Today, 3 December, is Eureka Day – the anniversary of the 1854 police storming of the Eureka Stockade which was defended by protesting gold miners in Ballarat, Australia.

The miners were protesting against police corruption on the goldfields, and against having to pay an exorbitant mining licence fee without being able to vote for members of the colony’s parliament. Although the revolt was suppressed, public reaction to the colonial government’s actions led to the rapid advance of democracy in Victoria, with all adult men gaining the vote soon after.

On the 150th anniversary of the Eureka Stockade in 2004, I travelled to Ballarat to take part in the commemorations – including reenactments at the historical village of Sovereign Hill, and a dawn ceremony at the original site of the Eureka Stockade. They were memorable reminders of an event that shaped Australian history.
