  1. Happy to report the earliest (and final) stream for #ORAS6 has entered production. Just in the spinup period now, but we have some #reanalysis data valid in 1944 already. Now just to be patient until this reaches 1993 where the already produced stream awaits...

  2. @phil_browne Noted and boosted!

Does the #SeaIce model in #ERA6 have multiple layers (e.g. of snow) so that layered snow-depth or temperature can be a thing? And does it have several thickness categories or one?

In general, it could maybe be good to have output variables that cover the seven #GCOS Sea Ice #ECV products: gcos.wmo.int/en/essential-clim

  3. @phil_browne @OceanTerra Yes, there is a lot that could be done, both within your #DA system or outside (with a #DA, or #ML approach?).

The #satellite ppl are also very excited by the data-rescue work #C3S has initiated for the early missions (Nimbus-5, Nimbus-6,...) We are hoping that the resulting datasets will be shared with the community at large (beyond being input to #ERA6

Visibility on these data-rescue activities would help other funders (like #ESA Climate) to plan R&D activities.

  4. CW: Introduction #DA

My day job is to improve weather forecast by using information from models and observations of the #ocean and #seaice to give a better estimate of the current state of the Earth system

This means sitting at a desk coding, but also engaging with people who know a lot more than I do!

I'm currently working hard on the next gen ocean #reanalysis, to feed into #NWP and hopefully #ERA6 soon. My focus is on #seaice #DataAssimilation and coupled #SST #DA

    I moonlight as a cake tester 🍰

  5. RT @CopernicusECMWF: #ERA6 will improve:

✔️resolution of at least 18 km,
    ✔️model bias,
    ✔️realism of near-surface quantities,
    ✔️ocean wave physics,

and will exploit more observations, as explained by Bill Bell @ECMWF.
