Here's my talk from #EO2026, "the unreasonable cost of open source contribution".
We all say we want lots of high quality open source software, but we don't like to pay for it. When we do talk about it, we rarely talk about the actual human on the end of it doing the work, and their wants, and needs, and aspirations and capabilities. We make the people invisible, and so we don't notice when they're burning out, or when they just disappear.
I can only tell you about one such person - me. So this talk is where I tell you about who I am, what I do, who I do it for, and how much that actually costs in real dollar terms, and I encourage you to think hard about your version of this talk. If we're serious about the open source future we say we want, then we have to talk about the humans that will do that work, or we all lose.

So it turns out that whilst we were away at #EO2026 a pigeon apparently managed to get down the chimney and into the living room.
I think that it was unfortunately stuck in there all through the heat wave, and with the airco off and everything shut tight it got to 40 degrees inside as well.
No water, so it did not survive. And it did not go quietly into that good night. A lot a lot of things (carpet, furniture, shelves, lights) are covered in pigeon poo.

Thoroughly enjoyed my morning at Everything Open 2026 on Friday.

I've worked in GLAM and can ground the idea that shared leadership can occur in some small grassroots reality
... and ... and ...
💫 Just so very wonderful to listen to @KathyReid engage us and talk us through how fine tuning a trained model like Whisper works (and a whole lot more).
Best heart and brain feed I have had in some time.
Community vibe.
