    Just follow the science 🤔

This Is How a Child Dies of #Measles

“Within a few days, your son’s fever will spike as high as 105 degrees. The #virus will break through his underdeveloped blood-brain barrier and begin attacking his brain matter directly, leading to primary measles #encephalitis.

The condition is rare among older children but more common in infants, who are also more likely to die from measles.”

  2. The #OpenSource #OpenInstructionSetArchitecture ( #RiscV ) WiFI Router live stream is now online at twitch.tv/ComfortComputer. This is also a fundraiser for a #lymedisease / #encephalitis test kit. You are welcome to come chat, puzzle, chill to Dungeon #Vaporwave, and support the community. :)

  3. I will be live streaming work on an #OpenSource #RiscV WiFi Router later today (I hope). The live stream will be on twitch.tv/ComfortComputer if you would like to get notifications when the stream goes live. I would prefer not using that particular platform, but I'm not sure if there are other platforms available (until our own is built :). There is also a fundraiser for a #lymedisease / #encephalitis test kit.

Important to note that #Measles (aka #Rubeola) is the 👉 Most Contagious👈 human disease that currently exists on the planet!

It is also one of the 👉 most preventable👈 with #Vaccines. Safe and effective vaccines I might add.

Any #deaths or #disabilities caused by Measles are completely unnecessary tragedies.

"Late sequelae of measles infection are related in part to serious mucosal damage and generalized immune suppression caused by the #virus. Even after recovery from acute infection, children can have persistent #diarrhea and #failure_to_thrive, with increased #mortality risk in the months after infection. #Tuberculosis can reactivate in patients already infected, and new tuberculosis infection can be especially severe. Further, tuberculosis skin tests become less reliable immediately after measles infection. Severe disease and fatalities are increased in populations that have baseline #vitamin_A deficiency and #malnutrition.

Death from measles is most often caused by viral #pneumonia, secondary bacterial pneumonia, and postviral #encephalitis.

👉 Before the vaccine era, measles encephalitis occurred in the United States in about 1 in 1,000 measles cases.👈

Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis is a rare, late, and often fatal complication of measles that presents 7 to 10 years after acute measles infection, usually in adolescence. Beginning with myoclonic jerks, stiffening, and slow mental deterioration, it progresses over 1 to 3 years, with a relentless degenerative course leading to #death. Since the introduction of the measles vaccine in 1957, this disease has essentially disappeared in the United States."

Think about that... with current trends, 7-10 years from now we'll be seeing young people dying of "sclerosing panencephalitis" again... and for what?!

  9. #Measles outbreak in #Alberta far exceeds it's past provincial peak in 1986, that of #Texas currently and even entire #USA known caseload. Once considered "eradicated" , this highly transmissible contagious #disease has hit hard this year in #Canada, with noted 1000+ case upticks as well in #Ontario. Young #children and elderly highly susceptible to rash and side effects including lung & ear infections, #hepatitis, #Encephalitis and other lifelong neurological compilations.

#Vaccination rates are lower in Alberta than Canada as a whole by dbl digits, with more than 50% of children in rural areas of Southern Alberta, the heart of this outbreak, not having standard vaccination shots. So-called "vaccine-hesitancy" is generally more common in relatively less populated rural areas that attract political ideologues and those historically isolating and living under strict religious beliefs. Many of the most virulent cases of measles have been linked to Mennonites and Hutterites who live in colonies, and are oft prone to believe it is God’s will that determine the #health status of offspring.

  10. @woollypigs there's one thing you could add, I think. Here in Austria and other parts of Central Europe, ticks often transmit tick-borne #encephalitis (#TBE), a serious viral infection that among other things can lead to paralysis of the arms or legs and permanent disability. Once infected, there is not much you can do except treat the symptoms, but there is a preventive vaccine that most people in affected areas receive and that provides protection for some years.

  15. The #neurological #damage caused by #EV71 #infection is associated with hsa_circ_0069335/miR-29b/PMP22 pathway

    Source: Journal of Virology, https://journals.asm.org/doi/full/10.1128/jvi.00844-24?af=R

    ABSTRACT
Enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection is usually accompanied by neurological damage, which is the leading cause of death in children with hand-foot-mouth disease. In this study, we demonstrated that EV71 infection can cause pathological damage in the nervous system, such as neuronal vacuolar degeneration, shrinkage of some neurons, edema of brain tissues in the hippocampus, and a decreased number of Nissl bodies in the infarction area. Also, EV71 infection caused apparent structural damage to Schwann cells, including a decreased number of cytoplasmic organelles and severe damage of rough endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. However, the pathological damage was alleviated with the decrease of EV71 viral load. The cell experiment in vitro showed that EV71 infection significantly reduced ATP levels and promoted Schwann cell apoptosis, thus inhibiting cell growth. The extended infection time and the decreased viral load resulted in the gradual improvement of cell growth status. Meanwhile, EV71 inhibited the expression of miR-29b and promoted the expression of PMP22 in a time-dependent manner at both mRNA and protein levels, with the most significant change at 36 h of infection. Subsequently, the expression of miR-29b and PMP22 was gradually restored with the reduction of EV71 viral load. In addition, EV71 regulated the expression of hsa_circ_0069335, which could bind and co-localize with miR-29b. Therefore, EV71 infection can cause significant damage to the nervous system and may be related to hsa_circ_0069335/miR-29b/PMP22 pathway. The present study provides a new therapeutic target for neurological damage induced by EV71 infection.

    Abstract
An increase in the number of herpes zoster patients has been reported since universal varicella immunization was introduced, perhaps because of reduced opportunities for varicella patients to experience the natural booster effect caused by reexposure. We investigated recent trends of varicella zoster virus (VZV)–related central nervous system (CNS) infections at a university hospital in Japan. We enrolled patients with suspected CNS infection during 2013–2022 and tested cerebrospinal fluid samples by real-time PCR for DNA from 7 human herpesviruses. VZV DNA was the most commonly detected in 62 (10.2%) of 615 patients. Kulldorff’s circular spatial scan statistics demonstrated a significant temporal cluster of patients with VZV-related CNS infections during 2019–2022 (p = 0.008). Among persons with such infections, the percentage with aseptic meningitis was significantly higher during 2019–2022 (86.8%), when the temporal cluster of cases occurred, than during 2013–2018 (50.0%) (p = 0.0029).
