Have spent a lot of my day ranting to my groupchat about the origins of 2nd wave/"midwest" emo in the 90s, talking about early bands that started it like SDRE, Texas is the Reason, and Jawbreaker and how the influence of post-hardcore bands like Jawbox and Quicksand and even Fugazi were probably even stronger than the OG emocore bands on the development of the early bands.

A dedicated #emo morning today with records by Elliott, Planes Mistaken for Stars, and now Knapsack blasting from my cheap Amazon computer speakers. Pissed that I couldn't sleep in past 6 AM this morning, but at least I had time to dedicate to one of the best music scenes of the 90s.

Italian Emo Core Band JAGUERO Share New Single “LIT,” Paving The Way For Their First Full-Length Album
Photo by David SarappaJaguero return with “Lit,” a new single that marks the beginning of a fresh chapter for the punk/emo band from Vicenza and fuels anticipation for their debut full-length — a highly awaited release following two widely acclaimed EPs
Born during the early post–“New Love” sessions (their second EP, released in 2023), the track has accompanied the band through a significant stretch of their creative path. It went through numerous versions, reshaping itself multiple times before reaching its final form just weeks before entering the studio. An unusual process for Jaguero — who often define their songs quickly — but one that allowed them to dig deeper into the emotional layers of the piece.
The band themselves describe the heart of the new single:
“‘Lit’ is a dedication to that person who manages to see us even when we struggle to see ourselves, to the one who sparks that flame that gets us moving again even in our heaviest moments. It’s an anthem to the strength that comes from genuine human connections — the kind that can turn a fragile instant into a new beginning.”

Escolho a coletânea (álbum duplo) Analphabetapolothology (1998) da Cap'n Jazz, banda indie/emo/hardcore/pós-punk de Chicago, do ano de 1989. Conheci a banda nos meus 20 anos de idade mas não dei muita moral porque estava mergulhada no heavy metal. Mas neste ano de 2025 já perdi a conta de quantas vezes ouvi esse disco. O vocal acaba comigo. Sem mencionar as letras genuinamente complexas, porém deliciosamente melódicas. 🫶

Dag Nasty is such an underrated band, their first two albums are some of my favorite records to ever come from the DC hardcore and post-hardcore scene of which I am a huge fan in general. Their melodies were bright and their emotions were on their sleeves.

This is maybe screamo, or emo-hardcore - maybe post-hardcore. Recover are from Austin, Texas (and are technically still together although fairly inactive, as they all have other projects). Their debut full length 'Rodeo and Picasso' came out in 2001, and I listened to this one OFTEN in the early 2000s. The record starts off some kinda -core, but there's clean emo-esque singing too, just about a minute in and then alternating throughout. I always felt they mixed it up really well. I dug this record a lot, but not really anything Recover did after.
