The state of these word-final vowels challenged me to do further research. Later Old Norse, Old Swedish, Old Gutnish & #Elfdalian confirm they resisted syncope, indicating they were long. A qualitative split between *ō/ɔ̄ >ā >a vs. õ# >ō# >o#/u# shows they had been nasalised. bsky.app/profile/scha...

@EricLawton "Elves appear frequently in Northern European and Germanic mythology where they are generally described as beautiful and subtle eternal beings who are in possession of great powers. The Icelandic elves, however, are their own species.
"Commonly referred to as Huldufólk (hidden people), the elves of Iceland live in enchanted rocks and cliffs where they lead lives that are very similar to those lead by humans; they keep livestock, cut hay, row fishing boats, pick berries and go to church on Sundays.
"Despite these resemblances—or perhaps precisely because of them—the hidden people prefer to be left alone and usually remain invisible, only allowing themselves to be seen in particular situations and at specific times like New Year’s Eve and Midsummer’s Night. "

"The spoken language known in English as Elfdalian and in Swedish as Älvdalska preserved some remarkably ancient features of Old Norse (mixed with its own unusual developments) until the recent past." https://youtu.be/adVHCw0N8HI #Video #Elfdalian #Language #Languages #Linguistics #Sweden #Nordic #OldNorse #Europe @linguistics

/k rocket/ ???
#elfdalian I need answers
#övdalsk -
@elmerot Many refer to it as #Elfdalian in English. So cool to have the association with ”elfs” even if it is coincidental (”älv” meaning ’river’ in Swedish).
#Övdalian is based on the name of the language in the language itself: ”Övdalsk”
Actually it is also now recorded by both names by SIL, even mentioning “Elfdalian” first: https://iso639-3.sil.org/code/ovd -
Spoiler alert: I intend to start blogging about #EastNorse language history. Not only #VikingAge or #runic or Medieval #OldDanish and #OldSwedish, but also older #ProtoNordic and digressions into modern dialects, #Elfdalian and Fenno-Swedish. Hang on and boost if you think your followers are interested.
