Key technology for the Einstein Telescope reaches next milestone
High-precision laser from Hannover is used in new test environment

The Einstein Telescope (ET) is Europe's future gravitational-wave observatory. The ETpathfinder research and development facility in Maastricht is testing key technologies for ET. One such technology is a novel laser source from Hannover.
The laser source was developed jointly by the @mpi_grav and @unihannover. Its light is now being used for the first time in the ETpathfinder's vacuum system.
These results will be instrumental in the development of future laser sources for gravitational-wave detectors, such as ET and the US Cosmic Explorer project.

Fits in the palm of your hand and weighs about as much as a grapefruit: The newly developed inertial sensor (on the left in the circular hole in the metal frame) and the highly sensitive laser sensing system. (on the right) developed by researchers at @mpi_grav and @Fraunhofer_IOF.
The compact inertial sensor, with a mass in the gram range, has now been tested in a gravitational-wave detector prototype facility. Its performance is comparable to that of commercial kilogram-scale sensors.
Thanks to its small size, self-calibration, inherent vacuum compatibility, and “plug and play” functionality, the sensor is ideal for integration into a wide range of applications, including the complex seismic isolation systems of future gravitational-wave detectors such as the Einstein Telescope or Cosmic Explorer.

The planned European third-generation gravitational-wave observatory is on the German shortlist of the National Prioritization Process for the realization of new research infrastructures.
This underscores that the German government recognizes the importance of the prepatory phase of the Einstein Telescope as a project of scientific, economic, and social significance for Germany.
Although inclusion on the shortlist does not guarantee funding, it is an important signal that the Einstein Telescope is being prioritized from a research policy perspective and demonstrates its potential to make a major contribution to the performance of the German science system.
