After nearly 3 hours of driving we happened upon the town of Echuca. Unlike Albury, Echuca is a tourist town on the Murray River so was definitely open on New Years Day. We rummaged in a couple of 2nd hand book shops and sat outside and shared a wonderful pizza. Most of the shops in the main street have big verandahs covering the wide footpath so there is plenty of shade for outdoors dining. The temperature was probably around 32 degrees at this stage so perfect for sitting outside in the shade.

Echuca was a significant inland trading port on the Murray River about a century ago. Now people can take rides on old paddle wheel boats, visit the restored Port and take rides in a horse-drawn coach.

The last time we had visited Echuca was in the 1990s before we moved to Queensland. Today it was filled with tourists ambling along the path pondering the most important question one has on a holiday - 'what are we going to eat for lunch?'

We took our time before resuming our trip - we had another couple of hundred kilometres to travel to our destination.
