We've had the pleasure of sailing on her twice out of Portsmouth and to and around the Isle of Wight. Great experiences and lovely to compare with modern-day cruising.

We picked up a jigsaw when we sailed on Waverley recently as the money raised from sales helps with the upkeep of the vessel and we like jigsaws. It wasn't a very good quality puzzle, sadly, but it was fiendishly difficult as a lot of pieces were cut nearly identically with almost identical colouring. We rebuilt the edges and lots of sky and water several times in various fitting combinations before finishing.

The beach at Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight for #MeerMittwoch this week, and this was taken three years ago today. At the end of the pier you can see the paddle steamer Waverley, the world's last seagoing paddle steamship, and we'd sailed on her to the island from Portsmouth with the intention of then sailing around the island. Mechanical issues stopped that but this Saturday we shall be trying again.

Booked ourselves a little treat for next month (we'll pretend it's for my birthday even though we don't buy presents) and it will be a second attempt to sail around the Isle of Wight on the world's last seagoing paddle steamer, Waverley. Tried in 2022 but ended up spending the day in Yarmouth instead owing to some engine issues. Lovely, old vessel with an open engine room to the pistons and paddles.

We travelled back in time for that leg of the journey – aboard an immaculately restored paddle steamer. Aboard the boat it is forever the Belle Époque, just with modern prices and credit card machines.
