  1. While reading @smallcircles #GrassrootsEvolution piece this afternoon, got distracted watching Bret Victor's history of computing talk, then jumped from there to his site worrydream.com and from there to #DynamicLand, #RealTalk OS and 'communal computing – which I've never heard of before.

It made my eyes leak with its gentle, thoughtful, humane, inclusive, spellbinding vision of computing that has somehow stayed hidden in the folds of tech narrative dominated by the same personalities and topics over and over and rarely gets space to dream. It reminds me of the excitement a few decades ago in some of the VJ/MaxMSP communities around physical interfaces and that I'd thought had been long forgot… dynamicland.org/2024/Intro/

(now back to that long read)

  2. @grimalkina I saw this recently, which makes the same point for everyone - let's get off our screens; computation could be embedded in the real world and then it becomes social naturally youtu.be/PixPSNRDNMU #dynamicland (apologies if I'm just looping back something you already shared, lost track of how I encountered this)

  3. @CordeliaBeattie @histodons @histodon 🧵#Timelines

Dynamicland is “a nonprofit research lab creating a humane dynamic medium” that contains some of the most amazing timeline and other visualizations I’ve seen.

It’s very enjoyable to explore the lab’s own history — documented using @dynamicland of course!

  4. The new website (by Bret Victor) is kicking up a storm in my circle today: dynamicland.org/

What a beautiful and fresh take on the future of , and !

Let's make happen. If you're building something on this theme, I'd like to invite you to a meetup in this month. Plz DM.

  5. @scottjenson maybe you know the #DynamicLand already, but let’s give it a try: dynamicland.org/

Because Xerox Alto and the Dynamicland have been built in a research context, I don’t believe there is any new paradigm out there without you noticing it.

  6. why Dynamicland Realtalk isn't open source
    gist.github.com/shaunlebron/4b

Some interview clips about #dynamicland. A better title is "Why it isn't on the internet". Basically they're afraid that would extend and enforce the segregation we have now, where we have developers and technocrats who have agency and then all these other people who are not part of that community for various reasons.

  7. Bret Victor, Realtalk and the ‘laboratory of the future’ vision
    jameswphillips.substack.com/p/
"Trying to explain Bret Victor’s vision is tricky in words, like trying to explain a personal computer to someone in 1960. People who have used Victor’s tools say ‘this is the future, why isn’t this funded’?"

  8. I see that folks are talking about Bret Victor and #Dynamicland again. That means that it's time to share this wonderful article about Dynamicland: christophlabacher.com/notes/et

A selected quote from my comments lobste.rs/s/defibt/gotz_bachma might be, "I think that Victor’s line of research culminating in Dynamicland, or at least the threads of research which originated in VPRI and matured in the Dynamic Medium Group, are overly romantic."

  9. Saw a link in our work slack to a new Bret Victor's talk: youtube.com/watch?v=_gXiVOmaVS (his part starts at ~14:30, but it can be helpful to watch/skim the first half for some of the context).

It is about their #Dynamicland, and once again, I'm both annoyed and hopeful.

  10. CW: Dynamicland, Bret Victor, spreadsheet programming

Bret Victor, almost any coder's "rather inspiring role model", is working on a fascinating project called #Dynamicland.

Not sure how to describe it, but "accessible, collaborative materialised #Spreadsheet programming" might be a start.

I'd guess it has stuff in common with other projects like #WithEve and #ObservableHQ, but its take on peripherals and interaction is fascinating …

  11. Good question @Shamar I don't see how either. I can imagine a network of communicating objects, and you can do a lot with that. But perhaps we're only seeing interfaces, not mechanism?

  12. Thinking about #dynamicland and #realtalk : imagining a work/productivity interface made, in part, from two piles of stones and a candle
