Well... I'm back home from this year's Discworld Convention and am slowly starting to readjust to normal reality.
This was my first International convention where I brought the kids along and they seem to have had a wonderful time and wants to go back again next time so that was a success at least.
Having spent almost all of the con behind the Ops desk I didn't get to see many items (did go to some as the kids needed a legal guardian to roam around and my designated other adult got roped in to be First Aid deputy so couldn't do everything), but enjoyed all of the ones I did get to.
It was also great getting to help people with their issues and other questions and I have probably talked to more conventioneers this con than I have in the past two together. Turns out I'm much better at continuing conversations people start with me than I am at starting them myself 😂
Also, it was really fun being a very small part of the Opera de Mole.
Anyway, here's to the next con being as much fun as this one.

#dwcon2026 raised at least £30,000 for its 3 chosen charities.
Isn’t that incredible? -
We are home from our first ever con!
I’m going to miss rolling past this guy every morning.
We had such an amazing time. Thank you to everyone who worked so, so hard.
Farewell @dwcon
#dwcon2026.
Mind how you go. -
Final hotel breakfast (which has been mediocre at best) then heading home in a bit.
Convention ended yesterday evening. I managed to go to the party for a bit this time, which was nice.
There are bunch of non-convention-goers in the hotel now and the atmosphere is so different. Very boring clothes. No rats.

Finally back at the room after a much longer Out than anticipated due to the crazy long queue for @rhipratchett signing.
Mr Rob Wilkins defaced my bag.

I recovered enough today to go listen to Stephen Briggs read excerpts from Maskerade. He did it dressed in a pink tutu. For charity reasons of course.
Afterwards, I got to chat briefly and tell him I’ve fallen asleep to his voice every single night for at least the last ten years. Unsurprisingly he had heard this before. I think multiple times.
Then he signed my tote.Bucket list item ✅

CW: Long self-involved post about finding my tribe and having a meltdown
Lovely day yesterday cut short a fair bit more promptly than I intended after only a few minutes at the party.
I suddenly felt so very, very… overwhelmed and ended up speeding back to the room and having a meltdown.I haven’t had a meltdown in a good while since my life is so small and it’s still lingering with me today while I process.
I could easily blame tiredness as I haven’t slept well since we got here, but it felt like there was something else on top of that and it was confusing and frustrating me. It took me an hour or so after calming down for me to make any sense of what was going on in my head.I’d had an excellent day. I meant what I posted about feeling like I was among “my tribe”.
The talk about masking and the discworld was essentially a large room full of neurospicy folk having a group therapy and venting session.Everyone here is lovely. The organisation and logistics is epic levels of attention to detail. The kindness and inclusivity. The thought put into accessibility for disabled people of all flavours is genuinely mind blowing.
I have never been anywhere, ever, where I feel more at home around a large group of people than here. Then it hit me. The reason this meltdown felt so different: it wasn’t because I felt unsafe, it was the exact opposite.
Usually my meltdowns revolve around sensory overload and masking. While the party was a lot at the end of a busy day with many people, bright lights and loud music - it didn’t feel like the sole or even the main reason for the overwhelm.
I feel completely surrounded by people who view the world very similarly to me and I don’t think I fully understood what that would feel like before now. I haven’t made any new friends because I’m very bad at it, even with an awesome group like this. But over the past few days I have had a growing sense of feeling like I belonged.
And that was unexpectedly and very suddenly TERRIFYING.
A very deep and usually highly guarded part of my psyche felt super exposed and I didn’t know what to do with that. So my brain did what I’ve trained it to do my whole life - run away, hide and explode.I’m trying to put this into words for my own benefit but does anyone else know what I’m on about? Perhaps it was amplified by how long it’s been since I’ve been out in meat space actually interacting with people, especially for several days in a row. But it felt so different to the panic I usually experience around large groups. I’m still trying to get my head around it.
Today will be a low energy day I think.

Today is my birthday.
I started the day learning to morris dance, which was great fun.
Then I attended a talk about autistic masking through the lens of Discworld.I have never in my life felt more that I am with my tribe. I am having an excellent time.
-
After registration, today seems to have mostly involved venturing out to investigate a thing and coming back to the room to decompress. Rinse, repeat.
Lots of decompressing. But I’ve had the energy to put on my first cosplay in plenty of time for the opening ceremony: gender swap Greebo. #dwcon2026

A whole year until #dwcon2026 and I’m already low key freaking out that there’s a non-zero chance I may even get to chat to the man who has literally read me to sleep every single night for 10 years.
Worried I might start yawning if we have a conversation 😆
