CW: turn A gundam ep37 spoilers
I like how the rett team isn't just a bunch of gimmick characters as they first came off as
and new mobile suits for the first time since the transforming ones from like 10eps ago?? harry (quite unpredictably?) betraying the militia?? dio's va being in gundam too because of course he is?????
come to think of it I'm quite close to the end, I'm so not ready 😭😭😭

CW: turn A gundam ep25 spoilers
finally a solid episode again!!!!!! felt like the show had lost its footing with the last few episodes, they felt weirdly unfocused on the plot compared to much of the rest thus far
the action in this one wasn't just good but it most importantly didn't feel like fanservice
also some change is starting to blossom in loran
-
CW: turn A gundam ep11 spoilers
I would've never expected an "everything goes to absolute shit" episode so early on
the militia was way in over their heads thinking they could stand a chance against far future mechs that hardly ever took damage so far, with mere biplanes and a handful of unarmed mechs of their own
their attack was also obviously very poorly planned on top of that, cause as soon as the soleil took off they were just like "oh well. better luck next time"
the ignorance of a hundred people or so singlehandedly tipped the already extremely unstable balance into total destruction of an entire city without even a silver lining in sight
it's fucked cause you'd normally say the militia is in the right here as earthers are the legitimate current settlers of earth, but with just one absolutely unauthorized move they caused far more destruction than the moonrace would've ever brought unprovoked and that brings the militia under some pretty serious bad light (and they were already disagreeable in their actions before this)
and obviously you just know the militia is gonna find out about nocis being razed to the ground and entirely shoulder the blame on the moonrace to desperately try and cover their ass
honestly really bold move for the show to cast main characters like sochie and miashei (and the "good guys" faction in general) in such a bad light, 0079 and zeta already had plenty of moral grayness but turn A brings it to a whole new level, it doesn't make you think "damn that's kinda bad from some points of view" but rather "jesus christ what the fuck are they doing"
-
CW: turn A gundam ep8 spoilers
the moral grayness in turn A seems far deeper than what 0079 and zeta had, this time there's no plain evil macrofaction but rather rogue groups among the militia and moonrace alike, while the leaderships of the two sides are actually trying to avoid war
but at the same time there's still some definite arrogance in the moonrace's expectation of coming back down on earth after emigrating to the moon for what have probably been millennia, even if their return doesn't officially/intentionally involve any violence towards the natives
it's the morally complex "two sides of the same coin" setting I expected from both gundam entries I watched before this, and I'm glad to finally see it
now to see how loran's admittance to belonging to the moonrace is taken by both sides, doesn't look too good for him right now
turn A also has an oddly lighthearted tone a lot of the time, considering how dark it gets sometimes
-
new day, new gundam thread, this time it's turn A
that was a great first episode??? also at a glance you'd absolutely NOT guess this is gundam with the old-looking setting, this is super intriguing
nice ed theme too, super looking forward to ep2 this evening

watched char's counterattack, it... didn't live up to the hype
insane production values for 1988 (not that I watched much - if anything - from the 80s besides akira and zeta gundam, but still I think CCA must be among the best-looking of that time?), but the ending felt like a huge asspull and it didn't feel like a great conclusion to amuro and char's long-running on and off rivalry
the movie doesn't really offer a whole lot besides the battles and I don't think they were that incredible, they were fine but not much beyond that I'm afraid, zeta and even 0079 had many that were infinitely more memorable
the bit right before the end credits was great though, no music, absolutely awesome shots, nothing bad to say about that... besides the ending itself being a letdown but I already said that
I wouldn't say I wasted my time watching the movie as it was a formal conclusion of sorts to my UC watches, but it could've definitely been a lot, and I mean a LOT better

well, after almost a whole month of watching zeta, it's about time for my closing thoughts on it
I'll start by saying this is not one of those insane shows I'd recommend hands down with no strings attached, for two reasons
for one, it semi-depends on having watched 0079 first, and that's 50 episodes/3 movies of prelude, which is undeniably a lot; the second reason is zeta itself is pretty long for today's standards with its own 50 episodes, and I feel like it could've handled its runtime better
it's probably just a product of its time, but I believe if it rearranged certain events, removed some repetition¹ and simply cut to the chase on several subplots², zeta could've managed a shorter, but much better paced runtime which would've absolutely served it well
I really don't like admitting zeta isn't an awesome show because it IS awesome at its peak, it's just that I didn't feel it reach that peak very often³
now that the cons are out of the way, let's balance things out with the pros: the artwork and animation are a great step up from 0079, you can see the advancement in animation techniques, audio quality and overall polish
battles feel way better than 0079 too - maybe it's just cause I got used to the mobile suit designs, maybe for the slower pacing, but I didn't find action scenes to be confusing like in the original show/trilogy
in addition to that, there were many fights in unique contexts that really helped set them apart from the others⁴ and the mobile suits' designs are far easier to take seriously as they no longer look like plastic toys, and are clearly more original in terms of design
the character cast is also great, most of them distinguish themselves well and kamille especially is a far better protagonist than amuro, imo (I expect pitchforks for saying this), acclaimed AEUG lieutenant Four Pussy is also part of the cast which automatically elevates the show to a higher level
(1/5)

CW: mobile suit zeta gundam ep17 spoilers
downed eps15-17 today and I feel like going on a binge, it feels like the show is almost done with a particularly long setup and is beginning to get serious
gundam-sized mobile suit vs evangelion-sized mech was not something I expected to see
speaking of eva, four murasame feels a lot like some kinda ancestor of what would eventually become rei in terms of "character archetype" if you get what I mean, they give off kinda similar vibes (on top of both being test tube freaks.. ok well I don't know if that's the case for cyber newtypes yet but I assume it's either that or post-birth augmentations)
also just realized how this is the first real battle in an urban environment, with the amount of destruction etc you'd expect from the genre
I never noticed how gundam never really had one of those done this way until now
the main cast is getting quite large for my liking but if anything that brings fertile soil for interpersonal drama between characters
oh and mythical AEUG lieutenant Four Pussy just didn't appear like at all in ep17 which is kinda odd lol
also, tag refresh
#driftiniwatches #gundam #gundamzeta #mobilesuitzetagundam (no I have no idea which one I should use)

alright new show thread
finished ep1 at lunch, the 6-year gap between the making of 0079 and zeta really shows, the animation is no longer nearly as wonky and the rendering on basically everything is visibly more complex
mechanical designs are also clearly more intricate than anything in 0079, and you can tell they were going for more serious colors this time around
my only regret is not taking count of how many times kamille's name's is said in the exact same tone throughout the whole episode

finished the 3rd and final 0079 recap
I found this one not only easier to follow but overall better than the 2nd one, I was particularly glad to see a lot of the focus shift back onto characters rather than just the action
this still doesn't change that 0079 is definitely not one of those watches that'll stick with me for a long time, but it was fine nonetheless, and more importantly it opens the gates for me to check out some more cherrypicked entries of the franchise
more precisely, I'm looking forward to watching
- zeta (which seems to have an awesome reputation)
- witch from mercury (partly cause haha yama op)
- iron-blooded orphans (stumbled across a video about it like years ago and I remember finding it interesting)
- seed (literally just saw it on wikipedia and got weirdly hung up on how it's a 2002 production, then thinking way too hard about 2002 sounding like kind of an odd year that never comes up anywhere) (yeah this makes no sense) (another, more sane explanation would be I'm curious about early 2000s anime cause I don't think I've seen any besides initial d ages ago, and FLCL like a month ago)
-
FINALLY got around to watching the 2nd recap
not much to say about the movie itself that I haven't said about the first one - I think it has all the cards to be a banger, but it's massively held back by being a product of its time
(rare) comedic animation details in the middle of serious sequences, hit-or-miss sound design, these are the kinda things I believe would've been handled a lot better if 0079 was made a few years later
the deeper themes don't come up in this recap as much as they did in the first one so that's also a bummer ig
one thing that didn't disappoint is yet another great ending theme
-
finished the first of the three gundam 0079 recap movies
I think this was just setting up the universe for the most part, but it did have its thought-provoking moments
I'll have to see whether to watch the 2nd movie tomorrow or next week
the animation shows its age but it's fine, if anything it makes you appreciate a lot more what was possible some 14-ish years later in evangelion and whatnot (had to slip in an eva mention somehow), my only gripe is that it kinda struggles with strong emotions, I think..? idk I feel like later animations got a whole lot better at that, but we ARE talking about an almost-50yo production here, so I'm not holding anything against gundam here
that ending theme was good btw
-
CW: FLCL ep1 spoilers
so I get hit with a meme shot barely under 5mins in and it hits me like when I learned the sayaka poke gif comes from madoka magica
anyway wtf how is the animation so good in something so old??? is this what a studio with a good budget looks like???????
also the amount of crack in the studio's bloodstream is evident as I officially gave up on trying to understand anything around the point where naota grows ultrakill v2 out of his head and it reenacts a certain evangelion episode
I figured this was gonna be good when haruko straight up revs an electric guitar like a chainsaw, yeah I think I'll like this
-
watched cosmic princess kaguya cause my friend recommended it to me
given the "yuri movie" reputation, I feared I as a straight guy would've just been too far out of the target demographic I expected it to have but.. nope I think the movie is perfectly capable of standing on its legs even if you're not a girl into other girls
the production value is quite insane (then again I barely watch ultra-new shows so idk) and there are some scenes that really make it clear they couldn't have been done without new animation techniques, and I'm not talking mere eyecandy here but insane shots with the camera rotating in way too many directions to be able to realistically get good results out of it without a 3d reference
the music.. idk it's good I guess but the only song that was my kinda thing was the second one during the big concert and I quite liked that one
the plot is surprisingly absolutely fucking insane in the same manner as classics like terminator or the matrix, won't get into details but it's got some great out of the box thinking going on
and as far as the actual romance elements go? I found them to be not overbearing in the slightest regardless of how clearly they're presented, it's all really natural and it never once felt cheesy to me
overall yeah quite a good watch, don't be like me though and forget it's 2h30mins long instead of barely under 2h (I finished watching past 1am cause of that)
-
CW: end of evangelion spoilers
well that was a movie
idk what people mean when they say it's any more conventional of an ending than the show's cause it gets just as surreal, with the difference it actually feels like they had a reasonable budget to work with this time
I found it kinda funny how the first half of the movie mirrored the HECU's intervention in the resonance cascade disaster in hl1 lmao
the first half of the movie kinda feels like it's rushing a lot, ritsuko getting killed isn't given enough time to sink in; same goes for misato to a lesser extent
asuka dying(???) def carried the impact it should've though
I'm kinda surprised they did as little as they did with the final, non-tailor-built evas, they were quite interesting
also the final shots were really cool, I dig the style
as for the deeper meaning and whatnot.. I regret to say I haven't figured out much more than I did in the show's ending, this feels a lot like it needs to be rewatched a couple times to get some kinda grasp on it (much like the show's ending)
I won't lie and I'll admit I liked the first few and late-midpoint episodes of the show more than I did the two final ones and the movie, but I don't mean to imply the rest is remotely bad, I just think I haven't understood it enough; eva remains one of my best watches this year
I guess this is where I'll put a stop as far as evanglion goes, unless I decide on watching the rebuilds sometime in the future
-
CW: neon genesis evangelion ep26 spoilers
rei's VA being able to sound alive might just be the biggest plot twist of the whole show
also I had no idea gainax pioneered liminal space pics two decades ahead of time by shoving random photos into the episode
all things considered I can see why people disliked these last couple episodes back in the day, this is one hell of a weird way to end a show, but what they are is not really anything not seen before
some of the other second-half episodes also do this kinda deep insight into characters' psyches so it doesn't feel of place at all
a bunch of sentences said ep25 and 26 also kinda resonate strongly, it's interesting
I think the biggest mistake gainax made was releasing these episodes when everyone expected them to be the definitive end of the story, without knowing the end of evangelion movie was gonna come out eventually (I have no idea what that's like but I'm pretty sure it's less of a disappointing ending than this)
so tl;dr: I treated these like normal, non-ending episodes and I enjoyed them because of it. if they really were the final piece of evangelion's original storyline (so excluding rebuild and whatever other reboots etc), I would've probably been left quite disappointed - not pissed, cause after all 25&26 fit in pretty well with the rest of eva, but it would've def felt like something big was missing, way too many loose ends
I guess I'll watch end of eva tomorrow, idk what to expect but I hope it'll be a much more satisfying end of the story
oh yeah shinji actually living an illusion of a normal life at the end was quite cool lol
-
CW: neon genesis evangelion ep23 spoilers
rei being replaced by her third (and likely last) iteration and losing her recent memories was pretty sad, seeing how far rei 2 had gotten in terms of showing emotions and generally not being a mostly hollow yes-man
asuka seems to have completely gone off the deep end after the last episode's events
unit 01 seems to work surprisingly well all things considered, after it awakened yet again a few eps ago
the official confirmation that rei has been cloned to hell and back didn't hit me as hard as it was prob supposed to, the concept of the clones being a source of "spare parts" was interesting though
still a mystery what exactly happened with adam, but it's cool how its name and that of evas have been weaved together
-
CW: neon genesis evangelion ep22 spoilers
hallelujah playing while asuka was getting - in her own words - brainfucked was the wildest tonal dissonance in the history of entertainment I think
also oh hey they pulled the spear out of adam, I'm actually surprised things didn't take a cataclysmic turn within the next five minutes
doubt that'll remain the case for long though
speaking of "what could possibly go wrong", a whole NINE evas getting produced in mass, shortly after at least two instances of an angel clearly showing the ability to take them over
I get that gendoh is any% speedrunning armageddon but why is the rest of the world helping by making more evas ripe for exciting angel takeovers
that last question would normally just be a haha funny but evangelion is the kinda show where you could seriously ask that with a straight face
-
CW: neon genesis evangelion ep21 spoilers
damn that's a LOT to unpack in just one episode, straight up serious-analysis-needed territory
my hunch over the evas' name has been confirmed, and the one over rei's origin has been both strengthened and made a lot deeper than I originally thought
let's see how much of this I can sort out in my head before I watch the next episode this evening
-
CW: neon genesis evangelion ep20 spoilers
alright NERV got off way lighter than I would've ever thought
I had rather expected unit 01 would've stayed berserk for at least another episode but nope, it turned off offscreen which kinda feels like a copout 😭😭 gainax must've realized late they drove themselves into far too cramped of a writing corner with the last episode
anyway this sure was a standout episode, it gives me the strong feeling they didn't have it in them to animate a whole ass new ep lmao, still the episode is good for what it is and while the deeper dive into shinji's psyche doesn't reveal anything that new or unexpected, it's fitting for the show and doesn't feel like straightup filler
same couldn't be said about the end though, I wouldn't have expected eva to pioneer netflix's trademark filler sex scene some 20ish years ahead of time lmfao
also I didn't really like how shinji just kinda appeared again out of nowhere, felt uncharacteristically cheap
-
CW: neon genesis evangelion ep19 spoilers
HOW HAS EVERYTHING MANAGED TO GO EVEN MORE WRONG THAN IN THE LAST EPISODE???????? I mean this is more or less what I foresaw, with unit 00 being half broken and shinji having given up right before a new angel would've struck, but I expected NERV to just use the dummy plug (which would've gone catastrophically wrong anyway)
but no????? it's even worse than that?????????? unit 00 is completely trashed (possibly with rei dying as well but I'm sure the entry plug shielded her from just enough damage), 02 is literally torn to pieces all the while 01 has gone completely out of control to an extent worse than that of the dummy plug incident WHILE SHINJI IS STILL INSIDE (and likely unable to get out anytime soon considering the entry plug seems to be buried under at least a full meter of flesh all around)?????????????
where the fuck do you go from here??? this feels like the kinda really tough corner a story would avoid getting itself into but eva just went and did that (WITH A WHOLE TEN MORE EPISODES LEFT STILL)
-
CW: neon genesis evangelion ep18 spoilers
that didn't just go sideways, that did ten whole barrel rolls FAST
gotta love how they based the dummy plug off rei in particular, it's not like she's literally the most unpredictable pilot out of everyone after all
anyway if angels can just take over evas like this now wtf are the next angels gonna be like

CW: neon genesis evangelion ep17 spoilers
suzuhara is the 4th pilot????????? in hindsight it makes sense (in a non-in-universe way) cause he's the only person in shinji's school who has a standout design but still that was unexpected as hell
he seems to be the most neurotypical of the pilots so far but I'm sure the show has just never gone in depth about him
also something tells me he's either gonna die or smth bad is gonna happen fast cause I've NEVER seen him in random fanart or out of context memes over the years, unlike shinji, asuka and rei

CW: neon genesis evangelion ep16 spoilers
I was so damn right this is where the show gets serious again, best episode since the early ones
after kaji teasing at a lot of the picture being hidden from her, and ritsuko lying to her with a straight face, misato seems to have nearly reached a breaking point with the NERV leadership
unit 01 appears to go berserk again and this appears to alarm everyone more than last time from ep2 for some reason
ritsuko confirms evas are copies of angels
and of course shinji's inner dialogue that feels like it might change something in him permanently..?
ep16 was seriously absolute cinema

CW: neon genesis evangelion ep14 spoilers
ever since ep5 or so I've had the feeling the show have been rushing through the annihilation of most angels until only a few would be left and the really fleshed out part of the plot would kick back in
I don't wanna say those episodes are filler but they'd be hanging on a really strained thread weren't it for the glimmers of backstory and the new characters that get introduced
the angel fights didn't contribute all that much to character development beyond shinji, asuka and rei getting more used to each other and getting way more skilled as pilots, and any tense moment ended up working out fine in the end without any unexpected permanent impacts to the story
but ep14 seems to be the point where the rush is over, judging by the recap of past events and the name-drop of several important sounding plot points
I'm hyped again

CW: neon genesis evangelion ep10 spoilers
WHY DID THEY GIVE ASUKA'S PLUGSUIT AN INFLATION FEATURE
also the volcano dive really was tense, I thought something was gonna go really wrong but nuh uh
way too many positive episodes in a row, I'm expecting a catastrophe anytime now
-
CW: neon genesis evangelion ep5 spoilers
shinji's dad is capable of expressing CONCERN????? granted not for his own son but I'm sure shinji wouldn't mind such a trivial detail
also why is it that every time shinji gets deployed in unit 01 he gets +30 trauma points within the first minute 😭😭 it'd be borderline funny if it wasn't terrifying to put yourself in his shoes

finally started watching evangelion
the first episode flew by in no time, I think this'll be REALLY good
the artwork (backgrounds especially) is insanely good, the vibes are strong with the distinctive old anime colors and whatnot
the presence of in-universe jargon everywhere, especially during the evangelion launch really makes the moment FEEL important regardless of context, again I barely even noticed 20mins had gone until I saw the credits roll
this might be the most captivating first episode of all the shows I watched in these past couple months

CW: puella magi madoka magica ep12 spoilers
I hate to say this was not the greatest finale
first of all, I like the choice of having the whole show's opening constantly tease you at madoka finally turning into a magical girl, when it only really happens in this very last episode (excluding past timelines shown in ep10)
madoka turning into a goddess was to be expected at this point in the story, but I didn't really expect them to pull what's practically a universe reset card after that
universe reset that wasn't the greatest writing choice, I feel: we see that mankind pretty much evolves towards the same exact direction, same exact characters and all (except for madoka, her absence IS a bit bittersweet).. idk, I feel like they should've had madoka simply erase all witches from that moment onwards, rather than including the past, as that pretty much calls for a COMPLETE world reset a la jojo p6-to-7
the episode also keeps a weirdly positive mood throughout most of its duration, it's only at the very end that we're told about wraiths taking the place of witches
I think this thing of madoka's wish being naive enough to effectively change nothing should've been hammered home FAR harder, it would've felt more at home in such an otherwise-tragic show
overall, I think this final episode was kind of a big wasted opportunity, but I'm still looking forward to checking out the movies in the near future (yes, including the two recap ones as I'll probably put the franchise on hold until january or so, so to shorten as much as possible the time between watching the 3rd - currently latest - movie and watching the upcoming 4th)
still a very good show in its greatest moments, would absolutely recommend

CW: puella magi madoka magica ep11 spoilers
the backstory of kyubey's race interacting with humans for millennia and enabling them to evolve was pretty cool
I also like the explicit mention of emotion indeed existing within kyubey's race, but in the form of a mental disorder - until now kyubey just kinda said in ep9 that his species figured out humans were a good tool to maintain energy balance in the universe because of emotion, but it sounded like they discovered that last concept only with humans, and gave their invention of magical girls as a solution shaky foundations at best
I'm not gonna say anything about homura telling madoka what she's been doing for the past several timelines cause uhh idk that was played fairly straight, nothing I feel the need to yap over. it did kinda lack the intensity to make me shed a tear in a moment that seemed geared towards that kinda viewer reaction though
I REALLY like the explanation of why madoka is expected to be such a super talented magical girl, tying it all to homura rewinding the timeline over and over for her was great (and you can kinda imply it from the ep10 flashbacks where madoka is instead on the verge of death after the walpurgis fight)
the walpurgis (walpurgisnacht seems to refer specifically to the day the walpurgis is fated(?) to come down?) design was cool; I read on wikipedia earlier today that the walpurgisnacht irl is a religious festival more or less, so it was cool to see they designed its witch around a festival theme
homura v walpurgis was.. not as good as the previous fights in the show??? idk, it didn't particularly go hard cause for the first half, homura has complete knowledge of what it's gonna do and is just setting off the traps she prepared, then she's taken offguard by the walpurgis not dying after all that and most of the fight moves offscreen. by the time we cut back to homura she's already pretty much done to leave the stage for madoka so it's not really super tense or anything, disappointingly

CW: puella magi madoka magica ep9 spoilers
gotta admit, I.. didn't really like the motivation for kyubey's actions
making it about keeping enough energy in the universe and bringing up that magical girls defy the laws of thermodynamics or whatever is quite bad pseudoscience slop
rare madoka magica L
sayaka's witch design is really cool tho, I like how it echoes her initial wish of having kamijou be able to play his violin again

finished ep8 we got a bit of an edgy character arc here but it reveals interesting stuff
I gotta say I quite like pmmm's magic system, even the more conventional concepts are presented uniquely enough to spawn entirely new mechanics you don't see elsewhere
-
finished ep6 earlier, this is REALLY starting to get into one-episode-pulls-the-next territory but I'm forcing myself to 2eps/day since the show is short enough on its own
-
just downed 4 pmmm eps, and yeah the presentation is VERY good, I really like the unconventional artstyles used in witches' barriers (the animation felt.. eh? in the first one with the collage-y theme, but it's definitely getting better with every new barrier)
the plot felt relatively chill at first, but after a couple eps you can start feeling the darker stuff creeping in
I also really appreciate how the characters aren't dumbasses and don't immediately do stupid things to speed up plot development
obviously I couldn't help but notice some similarities with - you guessed it - jjk, particularly the parallels you can draw between witch barriers and innate domains, grief seeds and cursed wombs and whatnot
hell a whole episode gives strong cursed womb arc vibes
anyway yeah I think this will be a really good watch

sooo I finished watching angel beats (the main 13 episodes at least, I'll take care of the OVAs soon enough)
the opinions I read before watching led me to expect it was more action heavy, which was very much not the case
still, I don't mean to say I liked it any less cause of it - I think it did a good job with its own set of characters and settingspeaking of characters.. maybe there are too many? a good amount of them only really serve for running gags and I feel like the main cast could easily be boiled down to some 3-4chars less
those characters' total lack of backstory (in the original episodes at least) makes them feel even more like little more than filler
though on that note, I'd rather take a handful of well-written backstories over 7 out of 10 really uninspired onesone thing I couldn't really figure out was the intended tone the show wanted to set... on one hand, it kinda overuses humor that isn't that excellent to begin with, then again we're talking about something from 2010 so maybe it's just tropes that didn't age well; on the other, you got some really heavy topics going on in the character backstories
I think the show could've taken a more serious approach (considering the overarching theme of acceptance, it would've been fitting) but then again, I'm coming hot off jjk which was very much a show that took itself fairly seriously, so I'll just blame my incorrect expectations for angel beats(1/3)
-
gonna be real now, up until now I wasn't 100% bought on angel beats, but then ep6 comes along and is lowkey a banger out of nowhere????
