My partner's been trying to find some remote social outlets while she works on her PhD and tries to not get COVID, which has seen her repeatedly join online communities for niche interests -- ostensibly hobby groups -- only to discover that what they're really about is being some toxic person's cult of personality.
This is the result of moderator abandonment.
The last few times she's tried this, she's given up and cut ties once it became clear that the central figure treats new people who actually try to discuss the interest as a threat, but this time it happened so quickly that she didn't even have time to make the decision before they hit their insecurity limits and started lashing out at people.
She's not all here for petty internet drama, but I'm kind of loving having a third party view of watching someone else's internet fiefdom burn down.
