    DO YOU LOVE MUSIC?

You owe it to yourself, to drop the needle at 9:30... discover how a true Julliard-trained artist can remake the plagiarized one-hit-wonder "Feelings" into a masterpiece of her own interpretation. 🥰

The great Nina Simone (1933-2003), Live at Montreux, 1976, earlier reinterprets Janis Ian's "Stars," flavored by her own personal experience and those of her friends; Janis Joplin and Billie Holliday. SUPERB!

  2. Are You Lonesome Tonight? - Sam Kinison

You may have heard of Sam Kinison, the legendary stand-up comic and Pentecostal Minister.

But few have heard Sam Kinison, the consummate baritone torch singer who gave Elvis a run for his money?

I discovered this rare copy of Sam's first performance on Johnny Carson. It includes Johnny's full interview, along with relationship advice that would even make Dr. Ruth blush!

  4. The 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame clip of Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood and Dhani Harrison performing the Beatles song "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" during George Harrison's induction ceremony.

Prince, off to the side during the verses, casually walks to center stage as the bridge approaches and proceeds to pour forth a guitar solo so achingly beautiful that it's become canon.

  5. "In Hell I'll Be In Good Company" — The Dead South

Boasting gritty vocals, aggressive guitar strumming, mandolin chops, banjo licks, and a steady kick drum to fuse it all together, The Dead South delivers a unique sound.

This is the story of a man who knows his wife is cheating on him. If he kills his beloved, will they both meet in Hell?

The lyrics are very visceral which matches the tone of the song:...

  6. Joe Bonamassa

"Nobody loves me, but my mother, And she could be jivin' me too..."

For years, my wife thought I made up this song... until we saw BB King sing it in concert...

Of all the musicians Joe Bonamassa could add – more guitars, flutes, marimbas, even steel drums – why add backup vocalists?

“Backup singers are an essential part of pop music, supplying songs with depth, contrast, and commentary...”

  7. ZZ Top ‎– "La Grange"

The 'shack outside La Grange' the song referred to was actually Edna's Fashionable Ranch and Boarding House, better known to the people of La Grange, Texas as the "Chicken Ranch".

“Straight guitar into amp: a 1955 Strat into a 1969 Marshall Super Lead 100. Fuzz sound in the lead and in front and back end of the composition is just pure tube distortion. Pickup-setting differentials account for the different tones."

  8. Jeff Beck -- Cause We've Ended As Lovers

Beck is no run-of-the-mill guitarist. He is in a class of his own. Beck picks exclusively with his thumb and fingers and is constantly manipulating the whammy bar and volume and tone knobs on his Fender Stratocaster to create a kaleidoscope of sounds that could damn well be patented by him. No other guitarist sounds remotely like Jeff Beck.

  9. EASTER WEEK RESURRECTION ROCK v1
    "Hurt" - Johnny Cash

    HARDENED METAL? Cash redefines HURT...

Cash took Reznor's self-absorbed lyrics about teenaged angst and rendered them into a crystallized reflection of what is important when you are facing its inevitable ending.

This was his last recording, it was filmed in February 2003... June, his wife for 35 years, died three months later - Johnny followed her in September.

  10. EASTER WEEK RESURRECTION ROCK v5
"Keep Me In Your Heart" - Warren Zevon

In 2002, Zevon was diagnosed with Lung Cancer (mesothelioma). He would use his remaining time to say goodbye. For his final album, Zevon penned this song for his wife. It's simple, understated, and without a trace of the irony that he was known for. It's just a plaintive wish for his wife to remember him and take comfort in his memory.

Haunting and heartbreaking in its simplicity. #DotardRock
