  1. "Why some universities are returning to standardized testing in admissions process "

    I know! I know!

A: Not wanting to fund more equitable ways of going through applications, and hegemons wanting public universities to continue *not* being representative of the public that's funding them.

  2. Re last boosts:

There's unquestionably a relation between race, class, and amount of public trees.

Trying to get to grad school as an older #DisabledAndSTEM student, I was turned away from loads of programs meant to give lab & field experience to undergrads and post-baccs. So I created my own auto-didact study of public carob #CeratoniaSiliqua trees in CA.

I do not have a grant to quantify the things I noticed that apply to how racism & classism have affected public trees in neighborhoods.

  3. Happy to boost toots from #PAG31, but I will not boost toots that are inaccessible due to lacking alt text and/or image description.

Blind & LV folks use screenreading software and it will just say "image" for anything that lacks something useful in the alt text field.

Please make STEM more accessible & give yourself the experience of doing #SciComm by learning how to transcribe and describe your images! @plantscience

  4. Systemic ableism moves the goalposts so that they can always define disabled people as being outsiders, worthy of nothing but ostracization and death.

If you work, you're a "burden" on the employer.

If you don't work, you're a "scrounger" just cheating to get the pittance one gets on disability.

If you're a chemist, you must be incompetent... no need for Deaf students to get an education in chemistry.

    What a good joke, eh?

  5. The man's skeleton was seized despite him expressly trying to escape the fate of having his corpse/skeleton go to Hunter...yet this researcher while discussing Mengele with some (not enough) disgust, trots off to another STEM crime with nary a thought... This is why ethics & STEM history classes should be required of anyone doing STEM in undergrad (ethics should come even earlier than that in our education). #DisabledAndSTEM #MedicalAbleism #Ethics

  10. This ends up offering a look at medical ableism, but not by name. Which is too bad because we're soaking in it and it's still prevalent in contemporary STEM. It needs to be made explicit.

An evolutionary developmental biologist gives background on Mengele in the context of academia of the time. And that's key "of the time" - others thought this way...they just didn't work in Nazi camps per se. #DisabledAndSTEM #MedicalAbleism #Ethics mastodon.social/@glightly/1114

  15. This is something I wish people would remember when those who absolutely love quantification are judging applications for REU programs - those with more resources (and that refers to more things than $) get a leg up on the kinds of things standardized tests were created for. #GRExit #DisabledAndSTEM mastodon.social/@Sheril/111360

  16. Even spaces for marginalized scientists can be uncomfortable spaces for those marginalized by disability as well... An in-person session with snacks guarantees there will not be very good masking at the event.
