  1. Had a great time at #DIS2023 this year! I've put a text version of my paper talk up on Medium, "Broadening Privacy and Surveillance: Eliciting Interconnected Values with a Scenarios Workbook on Smart Home Cameras": medium.com/@richmondywong/broa

  2. In a paper presented at the 2023 ACM Designing Interactive Systems conference, a group of researchers led by UW HCDE doctoral student @schaferj (with HCDE's @katestarbird and Daniela Rosner) used a process of design fiction, or creating imaginary, speculative artifacts as a tool for reflection and critique, to explore some of the opportunities and challenges with using participatory design in researching mis- and disinfo and online hate.

  3. Had a blast last week at #DIS2023 !✨Though I wasn't able to attend the last 2 days, I had such a great time at the workshops, receptions, and panels I was able to see and be a part of~ Also always a joy to see my colleagues in HCI, and I hope to see everyone again next year!

  4. Had a fantastic time SVing and presenting my paper with @katestarbird and Daniela Rosner (on how we might combine participatory design methods with misinfo, disinfo, and online hate research dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3563657) at #DIS2023! First time in-person and had so much fun :)

  5. Live from the #dis2023 conference: our new paper on designing technology for dance and artistic productions is now available in Open Access.

    Read it here: dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3563657

  6. And tomorrow at #DIS2023 I will be presenting my first ever first-author paper, which I wrote with @katestarbird and Daniela K. Rosner! We used design fiction to explore applying participatory design methods to researching misinfo, disinfo, and online hate dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3563657

  7. I'm in and out of #DIS2023, and live in pittsburgh! LMK if you're in town and want to hang or want recs!

  8. #DIS2023 has been a fantastic experience so far! This is my first in-person conference and I am lucky to present two pieces of work (details in thread) 1/3

  9. In the paper we created speculative scenarios to explore how smart home cameras might lead to surveillance between “primary” users who control the cameras and “non-primary users” who don’t. Such as a parent using cameras on a drone to watch their children. Participants looking at the scenarios reflected on multiple conceptions of privacy, connecting it to other social values. This suggests the need to broaden our conceptions of privacy when doing smart home research. #DIS2023

  10. Our #DIS2023 paper "Broadening Privacy and Surveillance: Eliciting Interconnected Values with a Scenarios Workbook on Smart Home Cameras" is now out (and received an honorable mention award!)!

    dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3563657

Talk is on Thursday morning if folks are attending.

Written with University of Washington collaborators Jason Caleb Valdez, Ashten Alexander, Ariel Chiang, Olivia Quesada, and James Pierce

  11. I'm at @cmuhcii in Pittsburgh this week for #dis2023 Designing Interactive Systems conference. It's my first non-music tech conf in a while, and I'll discuss the dance research i've been doing in Paris.

    Here's a preview:

  12. if you're at Pittsburgh/CMU for #dis2023, here's some recommendations w/in walking distance --

best coffee along your likely walk in is in the Carnegie Museum. Red hawk is also good if you're over that way in Oakland. the two best coffee places on campus are closed for summer, but i think la prima is still open.

Porch -- it's mostly pizza and drinks, but kind of upscale and has a nice… porch! :)

    Butterjoint.

I'm out of space, which is good, since most good stuff isn't walking distance :(

  13. I'll be at #DIS2023 next week presenting a paper! Let's chat if you're interested in AI-generated content, deepfakes, mis- & disinformation, social computing tools to promote trust, PUIs/liberal arts colleges, or have Pittsburgh croissant and coffee recs ☕️

Paper title: CoSINT: Designing a Collaborative Capture the Flag Competition to Investigate Misinformation

  14. Travel Announcement (again)! 📯

I’ll be attending @dis 2023 next week for workshops! I’ll be presenting “Dare You Approach The Mighty Oracle?: Building a Design Framework for Tangible Storytelling Artifacts That Evoke The Divine” by the lovely Dr. Tess Tanenbaum and myself 🎉

Excited to be coming to Pittsburgh! CMU friendos, definitely hit me up if you’re around, and I’m excited to be seeing more great research by awesome people in the field! ♥️ #DIS2023

  18. Excited to share a paper I'll be presenting at #DIS2023!

During crises — like natural, man-made, and made-up disasters — we see a flurry of rumors and mis/disinformation.

How can everyday users help investigators make sense of what's going on?

In our paper, we discuss the design and deployment of CoSINT, a system to facilitate capture-the-flag events to investigate misinformation. CoSINT leverages the complementary benefits of collaboration *and* competition.
