I attended #DIS2024 two weeks ago. Here's my summary, focused on human-AI interaction. Lots of great papers, from prompting to workflows to critical reflections! https://medium.com/human-centered-ai/human-ai-interaction-at-acm-dis-2024-d39848536448

Presented our paper "Do LLMs Meet the Needs of Software Tutorial Writers?" at #acm #dis2024 today.
Work done with Disha Shrivastava and my advisor @jin_lc_guo
Read the article here: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3643834.3660692 (Open access). In the paper, we categorize how writers interact with LLMs and discuss design recommendations for forming better mental models, prompting and validating the generated technical content to inform design of human-in-the-loop tools around LLMs!
Hit me up at CPH if around!

New #DIS2024 paper: "Designing Plant Driven Actuators". In it, we (Yuhan, @xjasminelu , @hoffman et al) challenge designers to reimagine what #HRI #robots could be like, embracing characteristics from plants (slowness, spontaneity, and even decay) and exploring their translation to #robotic actuation or even #haptics
Paper: https://dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1145/3643834.3661519
(if you can't access ACM DL, check via https://lab.plopes.org/#plant-actuator — all kudos to Cornell team for their effort, amazing collaboration & work!) -

On Thursday @Feng will be presenting this paper on thermal interaction design, emotional experience and Chinese classical poetrySmiles Summon the Warmth of Spring: A Framework for Thermal & Affective Design Grounded in Classical Chinese Poetry
Follow her on here and say hello to her at DIS. She's cool. The paper is cool.

Update on my #DIS2024 essay on "Collage" in the design of AI tools: I've created a repository with high-res figures and "activity cards" with the concepts from the paper (e.g. for design or teaching activities). On OSF: https://osf.io/rt4ud/

Many recent AI tools for text (#CHI2024👀) share a design trend: The page UI has been split into text snippets, cards, prompt boxes, etc.! ✂️ My essay at #DIS2024 explores this fragmentation as "Collage" - to analyse & inform AI tool design. 📝 Preprint: https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.17217

Very excited about our #DIS2024 paper, "Ethics Pathways: A Design Activity for Reflecting on Ethics Engagement in HCI Research" (preprint link below!). We present a design activity reflecting on the connections between ethics and institutional contexts!
(Also it’s my first paper co-authored with my PhD student Inha Cha, and a result of Ajit Pillai's visit to Georgia Tech last fall!) https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.16654

Conditional #DIS2024 acceptance for the students I mentored/project managed for my first "senior researcher" role on a paper!
And an R&R on the #CHIPLAY2024 I somehow got involved with last-minute.
Not bad at all, now for the journal article and other things I'm supposed to be writing.

got a paper* accepted for #DIS2024! this means I'll get to go to Copenhagen for the first time :moomin_yay:
I think it would be fun (at least interesting) to attempt to get there, from Madrid, via bus and/or train. Let's see how much bureaucracy gets in the way of achieving it 😅
*(it's the one I was talking about a couple of months ago, in case someone remembers)
