  1. Noorderlicht Advent #23: In the autumn of 2025, we celebrated 70 years of World Press Photo at Noorderlicht with ‘What Have We Done? Unpacking Seven Decades of World Press Photo’, an exhibition that invited us to pause and reflect on images from the past and how their meanings continue to shift. What do these photographs tell us today, and how might we re-read their stories today?

  2. Noorderlicht Advent #21: Today is the very last day to see ‘Rauw Vermogen’. The exhibition opened alongside the premiere of the World Press Photo anniversary exhibition at the Niemeyer and later moved to our gallery. Together with seven emerging photographers from the North, we explored Groningen as it is today and as it might be in the future.

  3. Noorderlicht Advent #20: In the former Niemeyer factory, once a proud symbol of Groningen’s industrial progress, ‘Machine Entanglements’ also explored the shadow side of technological innovation. What if technology is not merely a tool for acceleration, control or extraction, but also a chance to repair, reconnect, and unearth forgotten histories?

  4. Noorderlicht Advent #17: At De Proef, ‘Machine Entanglements’ revealed new relationships between humans, machines, and the landscape. What if plants push back against human interventions in nature? 🌱 What if the animal speaks, the algorithm listens, and the landscape responds?

Two inspiring days in which we collectively reflected on how technology shapes our daily lives, our culture, and our visions of the future. 🌐

  7. Noorderlicht Advent #14: During Machine Entanglements at Museum Belvédère, we explored how technology shapes and sometimes distorts our view of nature. 🌿 On the wooded edge of domain Oranjewoud, artists showed how systems, from cameras to climate models, frame, question, or even reconfigure our relationship with the natural world.

  8. Noorderlicht Advent #13: Christy Westhovens’ work, created especially for the biennale in the Tschumipavilion, took center stage at the Radioscapes Symposium. After visiting the biennale, participants joined a data walk, lectures, and a roundtable discussion. An inspiring day exploring the invisible landscape of radio signals 📡

  12. Noorderlicht Advent – Day 9

    Today’s spark of winter inspiration:
During the opening weekend of our 30th biennale ‘Machine Entanglements’, we travelled from Groningen in a beautiful vintage bus from the National Bus Museum. On Friday this gem took us to the Frisian locations, and on Saturday through Drenthe. A journey we look back on with great joy! 🚌

  14. Noorderlicht Advent – Day 7

    Today’s spark of winter inspiration:
In ‘In Full Colour’, emerging photography talents from the Netherlands, Ireland, and Germany explored queer visibility, self-image, and the power of intimacy.

LinkedIn removed our campaign image: a tender, loving portrait of two trans people.

That’s why we will continue to show work like this. 🌈

  15. Noorderlicht Advent – Day 5

    Today’s spark of winter inspiration:
Noorderlicht was on view at World Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai from 18 April to 12 May 2025, by invitation of the Nieuwe Instituut. The World Expo carries the theme Common Ground: creating a new dawn together – an invitation to rethink connection, progress, and our collective future. A perfect match with the themes of the Machine Entanglements Biennale.

    Today’s spark of winter inspiration:
‘Pixel Perceptions: Into the Eye of AI’ opened in October 2024, but remained on view until mid-January 2025. This exhibition explored how AI influences our perception and visual culture, both consciously and unconsciously. How often do you find yourself wondering whether you can still trust your own eyes?
