To move away from the corporate "socials" like Insta, Youtube, X/Twitter etc to decentralised social networks - mainly the #Fediverse - the challenges not only include the provisioning of the tech. Indeed, people like @elena do a great job to show how nice the #Fediverse is, and how #selfhosting is fun and doable.
That said, the barriers to entry for people are largely cultural: the decentralised nature makes it hard for people to choose one of the thousands of servers, of Mastodon, PixelFed, etc Starting at https://joinfediverse.wiki isn't an entry point for everyone. (however great resource it is!)
Moving from the corporate socials to the fedi, many people need help. Fortunately collective actions like #MakeSocialsSocialAgain in NL, #SaveSocial and #DIdays in DE, #VamonosJuntas in ES, #LeaveX in FR etc help mobilise people to make the change together. That's necessary to overcome network effects and (re)connect through our networks.

We are initiating this with a growing list of organisations, such as @commonsnetwork, @waag in Amsterdam, @platoniq and the Goteo.org crowdfunding platform in Spain. Recently also eCommons.space and the housing coop movement (PWA) in Amsterdam have joined. With them and Amsterdam University College @OpenTech_AUC (part of UvA and VU) we’re designing a transition community, building on experiences of so many movements going in this same direction, like the @rtm #ResistTechMonopolies in Seattle, or the #VamonosJuntas and #MakeSocialsSocialAgain or #DIDay networked actions.

Für die Sicherheitsregion ist klar: X ist nicht mehr der richtige Weg, um die #Amsterdamer zu erreichen.
Der Grund: Die Reichweite des Mediums ist nicht mehr ausreichend. „Man sieht das immer öfter, immer mehr Unternehmen und Organisationen stellen den Einsatz von X in Frage“, erklärt Sarah Marschlich. Sie ist außerordentliche Professorin für #Kommunikation, Organisation und #Gesellschaft. „Das liegt zum Teil an dem Image, das #X hat, aber auch an seiner sinkenden #Reichweite. Negativ besetzte Botschaften rangieren im #Algorithmus viel weiter oben, neutrale Botschaften, etwa von einer staatlichen Organisation, haben also nicht mehr die Reichweite von früher."

An observation on initiatives to combat the disinformation tool X:
- 4 initiatives started in Germany: #ByeByeElon, #LeaveX (although started by a Brazilian/Italian immigrant), efforts by several universities and @Freiheitsrechte suing X
- 2 In the Netherlands: #Detox and #MakeSocialsSocialAgain with great campaigns
- 1 in France: with #HelloQuitX and their app to help people find alternatives on Mastodon or BlueSky
- 1 in Spain: #juntas involving 120 civil society organizations
- 1 in Italy: lots of energy from Ban X in EuropeI miss the UK and Poland.

Vor gut einem Jahr haben wir mit unserer Petition „Für die Nutzung von wirklich sozialen Medien an #Hochschulen in Deutschland“ eine überfällige Diskussion contra-X-und-pro-#Mastodon angestoßen.
Inzwischen erkennt die Mehrheit in der #Wisskomm an, dass wir uns von Plattformen lösen müssen, deren Gebaren mit den Wertekatalogen von Unis und Instituten unvereinbar ist. Das gilt selbst dann, wenn uns diese Medien eine angeblich „große Reichweite“ vortäuschen.
Es war ein langer Weg bis hierher und noch nicht alle sind dabei, wie z.B. die deutsche #Hochschulrektorenkonferenz (#HRK), an die sich unser Appell richtete. Aber es motiviert uns, dass sich so viele Hochschulen und Wissenschaftsorganisationen dem #eXit angeschlossen haben, und dass heute so Viele die Kampagnen #HelloQuitteX und #MakeSocialsSocialAgain mittragen. Mit dabei ist z.B. auch die spanische Hochschulrektorenkonferenz #CRUE. 😉 Das macht Hoffnung. #UnisInsFediverse

👋 Convocadas en varios países ‘marchas’ colectivas de X el 20 de enero, día de la investidura de Trump.
El día de la toma de posesión del cargo de presidente de los Estados Unidos por parte de Donald Trump, el 20 de enero, es la fecha prevista por colectivos de distintos países como @HelloQuitteX en Francia o #MakeSocialsSocialAgain en Países Bajos para promover una marcha masiva de la red social X.
