  1. I uploaded my first 3D model! And in true fashion it's coffee related. I needed an adapter for a DF64 grinder to hold an Ikape metal 54mm dosing cup. I had lost the original plastic catch cup and it was going to be used with a Breville Bambino so 3D printing to the rescue! When finishing it I put a bit of vinyl fake walnut veneer in the bottom to ad contrast to the piece and match the wood accents of the grinder.

  2. New coffee grinder on order

Coffee is an essential of life and taken very seriously at Chez Muffett, although I don’t regularly throw enormous amounts of money at anything else other than actual beans; instead my goal is to wring as much value out of what I can afford to get on a budget.

But my beloved Baratza Virtuoso is finally showing its limits re: what I can grind for espresso, so it’s time for an upgrade.

A DF64 with a spare set of espresso burrs are on order. Watch this space for a hopeful uptick in productivity.

  3. It arrived!

Slightly ironic, though, because I really have the espresso dialed in well with the manual grinder. 😁🤔

  4. #espresso stuff

The FOMO was strong with me this weekend... after I watched a couple of tests of the #DF64 #G-iota / #Turin Gen 2 . :blobfoxlaughsweat:

Personally, I think the DF64 Gen1 already produces fantastic grinds for #espresso and the flavor profile of the #Italmill 64mm flat burrs really play to my taste.
It's a great grinder, especially at this price point of ~400 Euros when I bought it earlier this year and I love it.
(I also love my Fellow Ode with the Gen2 burrs for filter, but that is another story).

But, the DF64 Gen1 has some kinks and small things that are a little annoying and hampers work flow and maintenance a bit.
Not enough to put me off the grinder (as I said, I still think it's great), but annoying at time.
Static is a thing, but can be kept under control with #RDT. Minor annoyance.
I think my greatest issues are the exit chute and declumper. And while the declumper V4 is WAY better than the V1, it has a couple of issues with cleaning and buildup.
Especially cleaning the chute is a bit of a chore and a bit messy.
So, that is something that needs to be addressed in the future and I am happy that @Kuraiko has already agreed to help me out with 3d printing a new chute that can be opened and cleaned and installing the Mythos declumper.

Now the new DF64 Gen2 was just released a few days ago ... and the company addressed a lot of those issues.
Including a new declumper (although I don't know how good that one is), a small plasma generator to eliminate most of the static and a chute that can be removed a bit more easily.
Also a new grind chamber for even less retention.
Basically, the new DF64 Gen2 is a shrunken down DF83 in looks and design.

Buuuut ... Europe grossly overcharges the DF64 Gen2 for over 500 Euros and that is not something I can just spend on a whim. Or ... want to.
Selling off my DF64 Gen1 would be difficult. And I probably won't get much, so an upgrade would still set me back a couple hundred euros.
    So yeah .. FOMO. ^.^'
But I can't justify spending the money, especially because the DF64 Gen1 does produce great coffee (It's not like the Ode Gen1 where the burrs were .. not good).

Speaking of burrs... I might experiment a bit with the DF64 Gen2 burrs, when they are available separately (depending on the price). They seem to be quite nice.
Would they beat the Italmill Gen 1 burrs? I have no idea.
And I can't really justify spending 250 Euros for some SSP burrs, as much as they are tempting.

First world problems... hobby problems... "things that make happy and distract me from a lot of other problems" -problems.

  6. Fresh up on CoffeeGeek this AM:

The Turin DF64 Gen 2 Single Dose Grinder seems to answer all the quibbles and issues people had with the original DF64. Is it finally the real deal "Niche Killer"?

  7. We have a Turin DF64 Gen 2 in for review on CoffeeGeek.

Some insider stuff: I never reviewed the original DF64 or its variants because it always seemed a work in progress, one that required lots of hacks, mods, home upgrades.

The DF64 Gen 2 actually seems ready for prime time. Can't wait to put this plasma-equipped 64mm flat burr grinder through the paces!
