  1. Helpful tips for dealing with mosquitoes this summer. Not only is the article full of excellent suggestions from experts, it's noteworthy that spraying yards with pyrethroids is never mentioned. That's likely because experts view it as a waste of money. Originally published in the Washington Post but repeated in the Philadelphia Inquirer. 5. A common sight in the parking garage at my gym is people opening their doors a few inches and pushing out burger wrappers, cups, and spent vape cartridges onto the pavement. And now, apparently, flat-screen televisions. #ymca #delco #pennsylvania #gym #food #littering #tv #trash #lcd

  10. FYI, Asian needle ants (Brachyponera chinensis) are in the Philadelphia area. Their painful sting can induce anaphylaxis, so be careful. If you find them please submit pic to iNaturalist so Michael Skvarla (Penn State) can come collect samples for confirmation. #ants #stinging #stinger #inaturalist #invasive #insects #anaphylaxis #delco #philadelphia #pennsylvania #hymenoptera share.inquirer.com/OTb0j7

  15. Not sure how it happened but apparently this truck flipped onto its side, spilling a load of trash onto the street. Was a slow news day locally so two helicopters were overhead filming. #swarthmore #trash #accident #truck #delco

  16. I inspected all the containers that accumulated water during last week's steady rain. Every single one had a thriving population of mosquito larvae. I wish our town sent out regular reminders to residents to dump stagnant water. Would make a huge difference. #mosquitoes #insects #swarthmore #delco #pennsylvania #rain #water #aedes

  20. We had so much rain yesterday that water was jetting up from the basement floor in fountains at multiple locations. Yea, that's not good. Concrete repairs are on my to-do list. As is checking gutters. #swarthmore #delco #pennsylvania #rain #flooding #weather #basement #cats

  21. I visited my garden yesterday and several wood stakes that I'd pounded into the ground were horizontal and in some cases several feet from their original positions. And two trellises were bent over 10° or so. I initially thought "vandalism" but it turns out the winds from yesterday's storm were clocked at 95-105 mph. Peas and fava beans took a hit from the hail, too. Took an hour to clean up. #weather #delco #swarthmore #garden #wind #allotment #gardening

  22. Every borough, town, and city should have a webpage that discourages residents from subscribing to those frequent (every 2-3 week) insecticide applications from companies like Mosquito Shield, Mosquito Joe, and Mosquito Squad. As an example, here's the blurb from Media, Pennsylvania, the town next to me. #mosquito #mosquitoes #spraying #pollinators #insects #pesticides #government #mediapa #delco #pennsylvania #pyrethroids mediaborough.com/446/Mosquito-

  25. Found a perfect cat to adopt today only to discover that she'd been scooped up the day before after three months of waiting in a foster home. Sadness. But also: huge admiration for all those people who are fostering pets and who pen amazing profiles of their cares. Had no idea. #cats #delco #swarthmore #philadelphia

  26. Is it ever possible to get a restaurant to stop oversalting? There are several small places near me that I generally love but that consistently add about 2-3x more salt than is necessary, often creating dishes that are inedible. I'm not a fan of public floggings on Yelp and such, so am wondering whether there is wording I might send to the chef, privately, to get them to scale back salinity. My guess is that they are all supertasters and don't know it, so they don't realize they are physiologically wired to use far too much salt. Any tips on how to proceed? #food #salt #supertaster #tongue #taste #genetics #restaurant #dining #chef #cooking #delco #swarthmore #DelawareCounty

  27. We recently lost Danderfluff, our cat of 18 years and would like to reup to fill the void. Anyone in my area with leads on cute Persians? The one we had was a sealpoint tortoiseshell Himalayan. We adored her. #swarthmore #philadelphia #DelawareCounty #delco #cat #cats #caturday

  28. Here's a local story that is likely playing out in similar ways all over the United States: there are so many dead ash trees at Tyler Arboretum in Media, Pennsylvania, that they have closed most of the trails. I.e. there's a legitimate worry that a hiker will eventually get crushed by a falling tree. This situation is courtesy the emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis). The side story here is the expense: the arboretum needs millions of dollars to take the trees down, plus it has the loss of admission revenue because visitation will likely drop. #philadelphia #delco #media #ash #fraxinus #trees #forestry #EmeraldAshBorer #eab #buprestidae #beetles #InvasiveSpecies #insects #nature #entomology inquirer.com/science/climate/e

  29. Behold the chelicerae of a Karsch's purseweb spider (Atypus karschi). Not something you often see because the spiders are hidden away inside their silken tubes, but this exuvium was at the base of my persimmon tree yesterday. I've read that they include earthworms in their diet. #spider #spiders #mygalomorphae #nature #delco #DelawareCounty #pennsylvania

  30. The idea just popped in my head. Because of my interest in #DSKY and #NASA, I really want to remaster the A15 Delco journal into a fully digital PDF/A format with full text instead of scans and SVG for all diagrams. Many of the pages in the NASA archive are scanned, not straight, and some scanned with visual deformities. A clean remake of the journal will be better preservation and readability of the documents. #Apollo #Apollo15 #Delco #preservation #history

  31. My Dr. Martin lima beans are finally starting to set fruit. The variety was developed in 1920 by a Philadelphia dentist who had a side hustle as a plant breeder. He apparently sold each bean for a dollar (~$15 in today's currency). Seeds are about the size of a U.S. quarter and are super tender. Vines are vigorous climbers so you'll need a trellis. A big one. #LimaBean #DocMartins #garden #delco #gardening #legume #allotment #seeds #PlantBreeding #fabaceae
