Looks like the first game I'm going to finish in 2026 - not that I usually keep track - is going to be Star Wars Dark Forces Remastered. I've never played this deep into the Dark Forces and with just one level left out of 14, I might as well finish it off.

A very "I love you" to every game that supports 32:9 aspect ratio. Star Wars Dark Forces Remastered isn't the prettiest game and this isn't a great example of the few places it is, but it's still nice.

Another sick open source reimplentation for a retro game! It seems to be a fork of XL Engine, which was discontinued in 2023. XL Engine was an open source modern engine for Star Wars: Dark Forces that offered modern resolutions, engine improvements, better mod support, etc.
Looks like I might just have to re-run through Dark Forces this May the 4th. :odysee_thinking:

Star Wars: Dark Forces was (probably*) released 30 years ago on 28th February 1995.
(There are four different release dates in circulation on the internet, but 28th February seems the most probable.)

Star Wars: Dark Forces fue el primer FPS basado en el universo de Star Wars y uno de los primeros videojuegos en comercializarse en formato CD-ROM por las secuencias de video que incorporaba, que ocupaban un considerable tamaño para la época.
Debe ser de 1996 o algo más cuando estuve yo jugando.

Played a couple of levels of the original Dark Forces and then the first level of the remaster.
Basically, imagine that they replaced all the sprites and textures with more detailed images, and enabled it to run with modern screen resolutions. Same with the cut scenes.
Otherwise it's exactly the same.
It really is like remastering a song from the original audio channels.
Back when the Star Wars Special Editions came out, one of the things they did was redo compositing in a lot of the effects where you could see the mattes in the original print. (This being Lucas, they'd saved the different components). Someone at Lucasfilm said of this that they'd be "the movie you remember, not the movie that it was." (Not counting all of the other changes made to the trilogy).
This is sort of like that. I could have sworn the original ran at better than 320x200, but apparently it didn't. And at first glance, the remaster is in fact closer to the game I remember than the original game is.
