Needs a collar and buttons and such, but Will’s #ElfkinCouture #DandyShirt is nearly done. I’m going need to make a new collar unit, though, as I’m just not loving how visible the fusible is under this light cream shirting. #sewing #fashion

Because it has absolutely been this kind of week, of course I cut a huge hole in the front panel of Will’s #DandyShirt that was, you guessed it!, otherwise nearly done.
Too big to re-weave nicely.
Fuuuuuuck.
Haven’t made a mistake like this since the Rio was a great MP3 player.
So now I’ve taken out the left front panel and am about to cut and sew a new one back in and just couldn’t be happier with how things are turning out today if I tried.

The heat has kept me from sleeping well the past couple of nights, and hoo boy does it show in the sewing room today. After three “how the fuck did I sew this on backwards?!” on Will’s #DandyShirt this afternoon, I’m calling it a day before I make an irreparable mistake.

That’s everything cut, prepped, and ready to sew for Will’s new #ElfkinCouture #DandyShirt. Now I need to take a moment to get comfortable with the new #sewing machine before proceeding.

This lack of a reliable supply colorful cotton shirting is what’s holding me back from launching the RTW version of the #DandyShirt. It’s most vexing.

Will has ordered a new #DandyShirt, and I’m taking the opportunity to copy his pattern off to manila paper. Adding allowances as I go, too. Will’s is probably the last production pattern in my arsenal that I cut in old school couture style (no allowances). Which is cute for a very limited set of applications but, as I finally accepted, it makes for an absurd amount of extra work at fabric cutting time. #sewing #fashion

Switching gears, I’m copying off the ready-to-wear #DandyShirt pattern for professional grading. You know that’s far, far too much math for me. #sewing #fashion

The hunter green sample of the now postponed but still forthcoming ready-to-wear #DandyShirt, along with its rose sibling, are as done as they’re getting for now. All is on hold while I secure a new source of re-orderable cotton shirting. #sewing #fashion

The rose sample of the forthcoming ready-to-wear (in sizes XS-XXL) #DandyShirt approaches completion with just the cuffs left to attach. The hunter green sample is somewhat less integrated but will come together in no time. #sewing #fashion

All pieces are cut and ready to sew for the first two proper samples of the ready-to-wear #DandyShirt. With a little luck, these will be available for actual, factual sale in men’s sizes XS-XXXL in about three weeks. #fashion #sewing

I just spent the entire morning washing and pressing fabric for the RTW #DandyShirt samples that I’ll be stitching up shortly. I cannot think of a less efficient use of my time as production picks up. I wonder if the local laundry could do it for me at a reasonable price. They charged $80 to steam press 7 yards of wool a while back, so… 🤷🏻♂️.
Related: a large bed heat press is in my future. Applying fusible with an iron isn’t practical at any kind of scale. #sewing

I don't know what the kids call it now, but I've done a metric fuckton of what we used to call "graphics production" today. All to get ready to launch the RTW #DandyShirt. So scanner. Much Photoshop.
Feeling oddly nostalgic for DeBabelizer.

The Muses haven’t wanted to do anything that’s not the forthcoming RTW #DandyShirt for days, but I managed to lure them away for a while to find complimentary solids to go with this wonderfully theatrical print that Raye provided to use as the back panel of their custom #SummerBrunchShirt. #sewing #fashion

In a personal best time of 90 minutes, the body is closed and fully finished with cuffs and collar (made yesterday) attached on muslin #3 of the RTW #DandyShirt. 30 minutes faster than my previous best, but the quality suffered for it. Still, practice makes progress! #sewing

Thought I’d share the finer details of the lickety split pro shirt #sewing method I’m practicing again with another muslin of the RTW #DandyShirt.
The strategic use of interfacing to define collar, cuff, and placket shapes is essential. Collar and cuff fusible is bonded to big scraps to be cut down later. Placket folds are crisply defined by the fusible line.
Edit: this took me an hour.

A thought occurred as I was making the alterations to the RTW #DandyShirt pattern this morning. There’s much less emotional charge to altering patterns based on commercial/standard size blocks. Unlike normal, this pattern isn’t based on a custom sloper for a specific body. Thus I can skip the step of berating myself for not drafting a perfect sloper in the first place.
Oh, brains. Such funny things.

Muslin #2 of the RTW #DandyShirt has been fitted. Just a couple more tweaks to the back neck and back armscye, and I should be there with my standard Gay Medium size. #sewing #fashion

Hot off the #sewing machine: the next muslin of the forthcoming ready to wear #DandyShirt.
It was another chance to practice the quick shirt sewing techniques that I’m trying to level up to. Total time from a pile of fabric and pattern pieces to finished shirt: 4.5 hours.
Muuuuuch faster than couture methods, and I expect I’ll get even speedier with more practice.

Among @socalgecko ‘s many fine qualities, his shape is what I would call Gay Medium. Which made him first to try on the muslin of the ready to wear #DandyShirt. I’ll make these adjustments to the pattern and then move on to the next wave of fit models. #sewing #fashion

Old Zak is fitted with his straight stitch foot, and all of the pieces are prepped for a muslin of the ready-to-wear #DandyShirt. It’s another chance to practice the super fast shirt #sewing technique that I’m trying to master. <cracks knuckles>

Now for something completely different, I'm adapting my #DandyShirt design to ready-to-wear in standard sizes.
If you've followed me for any amount of time, you know that I have Thoughts™ about standard sizes. Not nice thoughts.
But there's no escaping them now.
I may need a Silkwood shower when I'm done here.

That’s the muslin of Matt’s #DandyShirt all done and ready to send. That no-pins elite seamstress method works like a charm! It kills me to write, but the quality is as good as I’d get with fancy couture fuckery in about a quarter of the time.
Someone move the coffee table. I wanna do cartwheels of joy!

All the bits for a muslin of Matt’s #ElfkinCouture #DandyShirt are cut and ready to stitch. I’m going to try the lickety split method that I see some pro seamstresses use to turn out a dress shirt in like 20 minutes. This should be good for a laugh. #sewing

In addition to taming a heaving scrap hamper (it's been piling up since July), I managed to get @Drub's #DandyShirt washed, pressed out, and boxed up for shipping.
This color/print combo is so <mwah> that I may make one for myself.

Will just came through to pick up his #DandyShirt. Did I tear up a little bit seeing it on him for the first time? You bet your sweet bippy I did! #sewing #fashion #art #ElfkinCollection

Who’s down for some Thursday morning buttonhole action? Will’s #DandyShirt is back from the seamstress and ready for final touches. As I’m the one with the vintage Singer buttonholer that looks like hand stitching, this part is still on me. #sewing

It’s cutting day in the #sewing room. Drub’s #DandyShirt is up!
And I switched to a non-couture cutting method. Instead of marking the seam line and adding allowances as I cut, the working pattern was transferred to manilla paper with allowances and standard notches.
Time is money.

Perhaps the best piece of professional advice my mother ever gave me was to always print any writing that needs to be proofread. The eye misses myriad errors on a screen.
Related: the #DandyShirt tech pack is done and ready to go to seamstress Karyn with Will’s shirt order.
