🇬🇧 Pet Shop Boys "Disco" – 1986
Pet Shop Boys' meticulously crafted pop songs being transformed into extended club experiences. Rather than simply collecting remixes, the album presents a continuous vision of the duo’s early dancefloor sound, with longer arrangements.
"In the Night" And "Paninaro" are highlights... 👍

Alice Deejay – Who Needs Guitars Anyway? (2000, Netherlands)
In case the previous spotlight contained too much guitar for your liking, the next stop on our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums is number 1117 on The List, submitted by Yuki. This is the sole studio album from the Euro/dance/trance pop project that features a handful of young Dutch DJs, Judy aka Judith Anna Pronk on vocals, and a single that is still lighting up dance floors and saxophone-playing sasquatches 25+ years later.
Do you think you're better off alone?

Alice Deejay – Who Needs Guitars Anyway? (2000, Netherlands)
Our next spotlight is on number 1117 on The List, submitted by @Yuki.
I chose this spotlight next simply because I thought it would be funny to juxtapose an album that is primarily all about guitars (see our previous spotlight on Vini Reilly) with an album that is completely lacking in that gorgeous stringed instrument. Now, I can see, see it in your eyes, that you think you’re better off alone, that you got to get away, got to move away from this album. But, there’ll be no more lies if we don’t deny what this album means now. That you want this back in your life, want it back by your side, ’cause that’s where it belongs. And it, it won’t give you up, it will never stop, its bop is much too strong.
So, do you think you’re better off alone? I mean, a particularly unique album among all the late 90s/early 00s Euro/dance/trance pop this may not be, and, sure, it was the group’s only studio album. But, is it a great example of that era and style that will still get your body moving, over a quarter of a century later? Yes. And does it have a banger of a single that still holds up? Heck yes! I mean, this album wasn’t given the Music On Vinyl treatment for its 25th anniversary for nothing. Also, saxophone-playing sasquatches know what’s up.[1]
The question is: which album cover is better? And, how did the Internet get a hold of this mash-up with Eurythmics’ “Here Comes The Rain Again” that (I thought) was only in my brain?! Also, is anyone going to any of the upcoming Alice DJ shows this fall?!!
I close my eyes, I am music, I am rhythm, I’m a DJ

Haim Play “The Wire”
Listen to this track by sisterly trio of pop-obsessed musos Haim. It’s “The Wire”, the fourth single from their 2013 debut record Days Are Gone. That album made a critical splash across the pop music spectrum, garnering praise from venerable and established Rolling Stone Magazine to beloved music snob tastemakers Pitchfork. The latter decreed the record to be one of the best of the century “so far” in 2014. It went on to score similar recognition for end of year lists from Stereogum, American Songwriter, PopMatters, and many others. The album sold well and in the U.S. and the U.K, not to mention internationally.
The album and this song’s almost universal appeal is a curious and unique case in modern pop music from the 2010s. With “The Wire” in particular, it’s still hard to decide what kind of pop song it is, if that even matters. It contains ingredients of Shania Twain’s and Taylor Swift’s countrified dance pop. But there are hints of Eighties pop in there as well of the type once made by Laura Branigan and Sheena Easton. Along with that, one can hear traces of what came before even that era, touching on the A.M radio rock of the 1970s with an Eagles “Heartache Tonight”-style rhythmic chug. Bringing all that together by 2013 made the music sound familiar but also new and fresh.
The band came by their influences honestly. The three Haim sisters—Este, Danielle, and Alana—were trained up as musicians initially by their parents. One layer of their apprenticeship was the steady diet of classic pop music from their parents’ record collection and on the family car radio. Another layer was the formation of their family band Rockinhaim, playing cover songs with their mum and dad at local events in their native San Fernando Valley. The sisters learned the mechanics of pop music along with acquiring instrumental prowess from having played together from such young ages. Their own interest in the pop music of their own generation came to bear as they developed their own sound interwoven with the influence of modern R&B and pop.
By the time their debut record came out, Haim were hailed as both a throwback to the past and trendsetters in the present. Listeners seemed to bring their own expectations to their music to garner the band both critical praise and commercial traction. It helped that the band were stalwart openers for many of the biggest acts of the day, with the aforementioned Taylor Swift being only one act that offered Haim on the bill to warm up the crowd. Before that, singer and guitarist Danielle Haim served as a side musician to both Jenny Lewis and Julian Casablancas on their tours. The bridge between indie rock and pure pop doesn’t seem so unlikely in the light of that.
Haim (from left) Este, Alana, and Danielle at Way Out West 2013 in Gothenburg, SwedenLike the best in indie rock, “The Wire” zeroes in on the darker side of human experience. It finds its narrators in the throes of imbalanced romances, not feeling the pull of love as strongly as their lovers do. But like the best in pure pop music, “The Wire” is designed for maximum joy despite its themes of disconnection. The band convey the song’s effusiveness with tight harmonies, compelling lead vocal performances, and an infectiously hooky chorus. It’s also deceptively detailed in its overall sonic profile, with traditional rock instruments perfectly balanced with pop synths and drum machines. In the middle of a song about how tricky love can be when you’re young and inexperienced, “The Wire” still manages to burst with The Lifeforce.
The theme of imbalanced and changing feelings in relationships belongs in a specific pop tradition. The video for the song largely plays this for laughs at the expense of the three cartoonishly brokenhearted suitors. Otherwise, songs in this tradition sometimes provoke thoughts about where the blame falls for the imbalance that often results in disappointment and bruised feelings. Somewhere in the middle of that in “The Wire”, there is a deeper subtext still; that love doesn’t wait for maturity and self-awareness to bloom fully for either party. Being careful with someone’s heart and protecting one’s own takes time and experience, and the only way is through.
In this “The Wire” is a song about responsibility and emotional maturity and about how easy it is to fall short of both when one is young. It’s about coming to grips with that burden when in one’s late teens and twenties, with the rush of love in the moment so often outrunning the impulse to examine situations and feelings. The narrators in the song haven’t quite got there, with mistakes and regret playing their part in the drama. The song suggests the struggle of being aware of one’s own ambitions, capacities, and limitations and being honest with those we encounter especially when it comes to love, even if that means saying goodbye. Love is messy that way no matter how old one is.
Besides all that, the lightness and breeziness of the song is what convinces us that everyone in the unfolding drama really is going to be OK anyway. Just by the way it sounds, “The Wire” comes off as a distillation of what it is to be young and full of vitality and possibility and impulsiveness. In capturing that state of mind and what it feels like from the inside out in the most celebratory way possible, Haim proved themselves to be precocious talents on that level, too.
In addition to being deft pop writers and singers from the outset, Haim also proved themselves to be top flight rock musicians in live performances. To prove the point, here’s Haim performing Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well” at 2014’s T in the Park.
To learn more about their initial foray into pop stardom, here’s Haim in 2023 talking about working up their debut album from the BBC. In that piece, they talk about their initial attempts at gaining traction, putting up their EP on the internet, and suddenly finding themselves on British radio playlists as they broke out as a celebrated pop group in a different country.

Pet Shop Boys at their most flamboyant and confident. Bright, euphoric synths, immaculate dance-pop production and Neil Tennant’s cool, understated delivery create an album that sounds effortlessly catchy while hiding plenty of wit and melancholy beneath the surface.
