  1. @HI_Greens well Hogmanay is one day.
It’s the day we use to prepare for the New Year- cleaning and tidying the house, washing windows, settle outstanding debts.
If you want to cover the whole period, you could consider using the expression #daftdays

  6. @carolecadwalla.bsky.social this time before New Year used to be known as the #daftdays in Scotland. Approaching midwinter sunset starts to get later, but the shortest day is still to come because sunrise is also getting later.
The shortest day is when later sunsets finally overtake later sunrises, but sunrise does not start to get earlier until just before New Year. Hence the daft days when the sun appears to be indecisive, giving more light in the evenings and less in the morning

  16. @WeirdScotland of course most of these customs originate from the New Year not Christmas. But some would probably be practised throughout the #daftdays

And Elgin Kirk session were sitting beside the second largest cathedral in Scotland which 40 years after the reformation was still sitting there ready for re-use at a moment notice.

    It was reused, several times.
So you can imagine how nervous they were about folk going back to their pre-reformation singing and dancing and having a good time!

  26. @Natasha_Jay in Scotland it’s called the daft days.
Around midwinter the dawn gets earlier, and the sunset gets later. But the two are out of sync. Dawn is three seconds later today than it was yesterday but it’s cancelled out by the sunset being 53 seconds later.
So the days are getting longer in spite of the sabotage of a later dawn.

Historically, nothing of any importance was done during the #daftdays
